The UFC, Vegas, and gambling

The Fertitta brothers, who together own about 80% of UFC’s parent company Zuffa, come from a line of casino managers and owners. According to some, they also come with mafia ties. Their Father, Frank Sr., died in 2009 and left Station Casinos and its mounting debt to his sons and shareholders. After significant reorganization, shareholders put control in the hands of Frank  and brother Lorenzo.

In 2001, then promoter and current UFC president Dana White  approached childhood friends Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta  with news that Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG) was selling the UFC. White thought that mixed martial arts needed a billionaire or two  to take it forward.

UFC 149: Renan Barao wins the interim bantamweight title

Hats off to the UFC and its president, Dana White, for even considering an event  in Calgary, and for scrambling to keep one going after a slew of injuries hit every single fight on the main  card. Although UFC 149 will be known as a split-decision fest, with three in total, more than one question was answered by the time the final bell rang.

Despite Urijah 'The California Kid' Faber’s efforts to avoid the kind of brutal punishment he took at the hands and shins of  Renan Barao’s training partner, Jose Aldo, The California Kid’s  quest for UFC gold---albeit interim gold---was quashed by the  Brazilian.

Faber used movement and tried squaring his body to Barao in the hope that he’d avoid punishing leg kicks. For the most part that strategy worked, but it also served to limit Faber’s own offence.

On July 21st, in Calgary, Alberta, Urijah ‘The California Kid’ Faber (26-5) takes a shot at the UFC’s 135 pound interim belt, a fight made necessary due to  Champion Dominick Cruz’s injury. Faber and Cruz had been set to fight after their stint on The Ultimate Fighter Season 15, but it wasn’t meant to be. Faber will now meet Brazilian buzzsaw Renan Barao, who is 30-1 all-time and 3-0 in the UFC. His only loss was his first fight, back in 2005.

Faber submitted Cruz in a 145 pound featherweight title fight in the WEC in March, 2007, but  lost to Cruz via 5 round decision at bantamweight in July, 2011. Fans had been waiting for this rubber match with more anticipation than US republicans are awaiting November’s election. But Barao is an enigma Faber may be unable to crack.

The headliner for The UFC on Fuel TV 4 had Mark ‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine’  Munoz vs. Chris ‘All American’ Weidman.  Ideas swirled among fans and commentators that the winner might be in line for a shot at middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva. Had the fight been lackadaisical, or had it gone three rounds, it likely would have elicited  a loud “Meh” from UFC president Dana White. Chris Weidman’s spectacular performance, however, may catapult him into said shot.

UFC 148: Anderson Silva TKOs Chael Sonnen

The eagerly anticipated fight between UFC middleweight champion Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva and uber trash-talker Chael Sonnen had its auspicious start with the Brazilian’s unequalled walk-in song, DMX’s ‘Ain’t No Sunshine When it’s On’. The crowd went wild and Sonnen, stewing inside the Octagon while Silva hugged his entire team and family around him, paced.

At the introductions and instructions,  Sonnen stared icily but failed to come centre-Octagon when summoned by the referee, so Silva proceeded to bow in all four directions, as is his custom. But the ref brought Sonnen in, and there an amped Silva angled his body toward a coiled Sonnen.

A lot of mud has been slung leading up to the UFC 148’s middleweight title rematch between Champion Anderson 'The Spider' Silva and #1 contender Chael Sonnen. Almost all the mud has been flung from Sonnen at Silva.

"You tell Anderson Silva that I'm coming over and I'm kicking down his backdoor and patting his little lady on the ass and I'm telling her to make me a steak, medium-rare just how I like it,” Sonnen said on The MMA Show with Mauro Ranallo.

Speaking of Anderson Silva’s Brazilian jiu Jitsu black belt under the Nogueira brothers, Sonnen quipped, “A black belt under the Nogueiras is like saying I got a free toy in my Happy Meal.”

UFC 147: Rich Franklin scores gutsy win over Wanderlei Silva

UFC 147 in Brazil was headlined by legends and future hall-of-famers Wanderlei ‘The Axe Murderer’ Silva (34-12-1) and Rich ‘Ace’ Franklin (29-6). Soccer-style cheers rose in waves for local favourite Silva, while Franklin sported a new hairstyle and tight pink fight tights rather than his staple brown and pink fight shorts.

Fans and the UFC had high hopes for this fight, which had Franklin replace an injured Vitor Belfort. Ace and The Axe Murderer didn’t disappoint. Franklin used distance, timing, and his trademark body kicks to stifle Wanderlei’s love of brawling, while Wanderlei used his counter right to send his own message to Franklin.

UFC Fight Night on FX: Maynard digs deep for win

Guida v. Maynard

Clay ‘The Carpenter’ Guida’s locks needed to be tied up due to a complaint, not from his opponent, Gray ‘The Bully’ Maynard, but from Maynard’s camp. More problematic for Maynard in this fight is Guida’s broken rhythm and ridiculous pace. Maynard’s better wrestling pedigree and one punch KO power had him favoured slightly in this lightweight  eliminator.

Constant motion and a herky-jerky style, as well as a pair of bogus green ribbons tied in Guida’s hair, made it impossible for The Bully to bully Guida early on. Guida  opened a cut on Maynard’s nose by peppering with rabbit punches. By the middle of round two, Maynard began to cut off the cage and find some timing. Surprisingly, there wasn’t one take down attempt in rounds one or two.

Two UFC events in two days

the UFC on FX

The headliner Friday, June 22nd, has the Energizer Bunny Clay Guida taking on Gray Maynard, a matchup that could be fight or snoozer of the year. Both men are stupendous wrestlers as it relates to MMA, and  could have Tenacious as their middle name, but both men are only decent strikers. This means if the wrestling cancels out, we’re left with a mediocre if entertaining slugfest.

Gray ‘The Bully’ Maynard, who is 10-1-1, has only lost to former champ Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar. He has a win, loss, and draw with The Answer, and eight decisions out of ten wins. Typically he has utilized his wrestling not so much for lay and pray as lay and recite the ten stations of the cross, which irks some fans.  But he is a handful for absolutely anybody who fights or trains with him.

UFC on FX 3: Demetrious outpoints McCall

Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson set the trap and scored a win over Ian ‘Uncle Creepy’ McCall tonight, earning himself a shot at Joseph Benavidez in the inaugural 125 pound flyweight title fight. The win was certain if not decisive for Mighty Mouse, who came into the octagon with bigger lungs and more than a little horse sense.

In the first, Johnson took the fight  down, used his wrestling to out-position McCall in the stand up, and floored Uncle Creepy with a sharp right hand. In the second, McCall had some answers of his own, took Johnson to the mat a few times, and out-struck Johnson on the feet. The pace was fast, but fans were cheering for a finish.
