Harper's no longer master of his own house
Forty-one years ago, as a young volunteer, this writer donned a freshly ironed blouse and home-made lavender pencil skirt to deliver leaflets in her tiny Alberta town for Peter Lougheed, taking part in the election of a Canadian colossus.
This week, Canada braced itself for another earthquake out of Alberta, and we got one.
Where to begin?
The spectacular collapse of the Wildrose Alliance makes a natural headline. Danielle Smith's debate performance, in which she was booed for doubting climate science, spelled trouble, and within days, the air was coming out of her tires.
Soon enough, the wheels flew right off. Two absurdly paleolithic candidates met with what amounted to a shrug from their photogenic leader who was more troubled by climate scientists than her own gay-bashing candidates.
In a single stroke Wildrose was exposed as a party bereft of substance, led by an impostor, and the entire campaign disintegrated like a house of sand.
Yet, a focus here misses the true earthquake. This election was in reality a titanic clash between two giants of Canadian conservatism––Peter Lougheed and Stephen Harper. Its outcome will shape our future.

Forming government in 1971 with a Harvard MBA, a piercing intellect and a cool confidence, Peter Lougheed swiftly asserted strong government powers. He raised royalties from the oil sector, enacted a provincial bill of rights and reformed matrimonial property law. He purchased Pacific Western Airlines, opening the oil-sands to development, founded the publicly owned
Alberta Energy Company, fought epic battles with Ottawa and introduced the Alberta Heritage Fund.
Through it all Lougheed bent Alberta’s most powerful interests to his will, employing their strength in service of a long-term vision of prosperity and stability for all. In spirit, if not in fact, Peter Lougheed is Alberta’s father of Confederation.

Harper is scum and if he doesn't watch his steps, along with all the other cons, they're quickly going to find them selves linched by the very people they claim to serve.
I FULLY agree with this piece!
The 2 by-elections in BC, the kersplat of The Wildrose, Harper's personal numbers being in free fall in the Nanos poll, the Forum poll putting the NDP at #1, the national consensus seeming to form around Mulcair, The Council of Canadians' legal suit, and now the resignation of Witmer in Ontario thus leaving the door open for McGuinty to no longer be in minority after a by-election...
These are clear signs Canadians have had enough of the PM and his party.
F-35s, roboCON, $16 OJ, MacKay's copter joyride, the $2B LAV purchase boondoggle, Paridis' 2 additional ethics violations, the public service warnings on cuts, the invisible $114B bank bailout...
The constant drip, drip, drip of bad news is revealing them to be quite incompetent financial managers...
These are clear signs the public service and media are starting to turn.
I have a feeling that the CPC's Party Executive will be asking for a leadership review after Harper's second year as by that time, he'll have become SUCH a liability they'll be desperate to be rid of him!
Even with your perceptive observations you did not mention that Allison Redford at one time challenged the unfortunate Rob Anders for the nomination for the Conservative Party for Calgary West, yet the riding association, no doubt with the support of Stephen Harper beat her back.
Ms. Redford has been engaging other premiers in the beginnings of forging a national voice on issues which the federal government has apparently abandonned. As noted in the article, Stephen Harper is an isolationist, only forging alliances with business, and not people or non-business institutions. It will be interesting to see how this falls out going forward, with the provinces possibly forging a national concensus leaving aside the federal government.
I agree, with one exception ..... this faux con party should not be left to govern another year!! Actually, not another day! The #electionfraud IMO is the most important issue of our day.
It is quite clear #electionfraud happened, and as such, this faux govt. should be removed from power immediately. If not, then it should be put in 'neutral', as in sitting, BUT no trade agreements, no legislation passed, at all, until a Royal Commission and/or independent Public Inquiry can be held.
We have been robbed of our vote, and are watching our Canada be raped, pillaged, our resources, including water! being sold off. This is an abomination!
