Christy Clark partnered in Enbridge lobbying firm before becoming BC premier

Documents leaked to the Vancouver Observer show that Clark was a partner in a lobbying firm contracted by Enbridge Inc. that operated from her former residential address.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark was a partner in a lobbying firm that was contracted by Enbridge and lobbied the federal government on the company's behalf, according to documents obtained by The Vancouver Observer. The documents originate from the years when Clark stepped away from politics.

The Premier's spokesperson, however, stated that Enbridge was no longer a client of the firm by the time she joined the firm.

In a 2006 Confidential Government Relations Plan from Burrard Communications, Clark is listed as a partner in the company. Burrard Communications is a lobbying firm founded by Clark’s ex-husband Mark Marissen.

Burrard Communications lobbied the federal government on behalf of Enbridge Inc. starting in April 2005. The Plan stated that “Burrard worked on issues related to their Gateway Project" including "strategic communications advice and federal government relations.”

The firm was located at Clark’s then-primary residence at 511 San Remo Drive in Port Moody, BC – where Clark was the former provincial MLA for Port Moody/Burnaby Mountain. The registration was later switched to an address on Granville Street in Vancouver, BC.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Clark said, when presented with the documents from Burrard Communications listing her name. Clark faced questions about her past work with Burrard Communications while she was in Ottawa to promote B.C.’s Liquid Natural Resources on Monday.

"(Clark) never worked for Enbridge and by the time she briefly worked at Burrard, Enbridge was no longer a client," her press secretary Sam Oliphant said today.

Clark's ties to the lobbying firm for Enbridge appeared to have ended entirely when she became Premier, but she later raised eyebrows by appointing Ken Boessenkool, a former Enbridge lobbyist and advisor to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, as her chief of staff in 2012.

Her ex-husband's name was among those lobbying for Enbridge on behalf of Burrard Communications. The other Enbridge lobbyist at the firm, John Fraser, later became Clark's assistant deputy minister for strategic planning and public engagement. According to a media report in 2006, she was slated to join the firm as an equal partner.

Save the Douglas Channel

If Clark were serious about looking-out for BC, she would stop Kinder Morgan from transporting dilbit through the Trans Mountain pipeline. There is no equipment that will clean-up a tar sands spill in Vancouver harbour and down into the Fraser River, which will destroy the salmon fishery. A tar sands spill down into the Douglas Channel will destroy all forms mammal life, lower real estate values, destroy fishing communities and livelihoods, stop start-up businesses and eliminate the tourist business. Wow! What a magnificent piece of investigative journalism. Vancouver Observer, stand tall for Canadian democracy.

Disgusting, but not surprising.

I always thought Christy was an Enbridge plant after she lost her riding but still somehow ended up being our unelected premiere.

The fix is in, the rot is deep.

This is banana republic territory Christy is steering us towards.

Clark should resign immediately!!!

Christy Clark should resign immediately as a MLA and the Premier of this province until a proper and thorough investigation into this matter can be done.  And I'm not talking about John Dyble or Paul Fraser doing the "investigating"!

Resident evil

Oh for f#*k sake.   Just another pig at the trough.   This kind of stuff is disheartening to say the least, we know that the Liberals and big oil are in bed together but this is hard to read.  How can these people sleep at night? To those that vote for this bunch of cretins you will reap what you sow. A polluted and diminished province that wallows in corruption, the problem is that your taking us all down with you.

John Fraser

So Clark is to be hung out to dry because her husband (ex-husband actually) was associated with an Enbridge lobbyist. Christ, I thought that this was the 21st century where women have their own personalities and lives. Get with the program folks. Women are people too. Some even become provincial premiers without piggy-backing on their husbands.

Either she or your research

Either she or your research staff is lying, and my experience with the right-wing makes me tend to want to believe you research team!

i thought the people of BC were more responsible than they appear to be since the last election! They eliminate a good Premier for the sake of a $10,000 deck job and are now overwhelmingly happy with a chic that would jump into bed with a corporate group that will eventyally rob the people of Canada dry of resource revenue and the environment we all live in!

I do believe the other media will totally convince the non-thinkers of BC that she is totally responsable for the well being of all BC! What a joke She is!

Given the fact John Fraser worked for Burrard Communications #lobbyist #Enbridge and his father wasthe conflict of interest commissioner in VanDongen complaint makes one question Clark's ethics.

Further investigation is required to proof Clark was alobbyist #Enbridge, but, her assoc. with Enbridge lobbyists is clear...Her staffers, Ken Boessenkoel, Jay Hill, Dimitri Pantalopolous, and Chuck Strahl..all #Lobbyists for Enbridge.

It appears more like a situation, whereby, she is facilitating Enbridge in BC but at the same time at the federal level, given all are past Harper staffers.

People need to open their eyes and connect thepieces of the puzzle...it does not provide a very good picture of integrity in government in BC

Christy Clark and Enbridge lobbying

Certainly this information doesn't give an observer much optimism that she is a person willing to undertake a personal study of the science and facts behind climate change.  I don't think any politicians in this era should be permitted to throw their hat in the ring for a public position, unless they have demonstrated an adequate understanding of science, climate change principles, facts, and projections, and a basic working knowledge of both ethics and accounting.

None of our federal or provincial leaders, other than perhaps the Ontario premier, seem to get that there are two columns on the table of accounting.  You can't reasonably talk about the economic benefits of the fossil fuel industry, without also tallying up the costs of climate devastation, species loss, loss of tourism dollars, loss of money for oil spills, polluted air and water, loss of agricultural land and tourism dollars, and so on, and so forth.  And that doesn't even include all the vast public dollars being used by governments to propagandize for the oil and gas industry.  Millions and millions of dollars, blown on ad campaigns by Stephen Harper, to try to flog continuing climate destruction during what are hopefully the waning days of the outdated, overly harmful fossil fuel industry.

Election fraud.

Cons convicted of election fraud in 2006, with over $200k paid in fines, but not a single day of jail time for this major crime.

Cons convicted of election fraud in 2008, with Dean Del Maestro and Peter Penashue charged.

Election fraud confirmed in 2011, with foreign newspapers calling the election "a sham" and "rigged"; CIMS database confirmed the source of the data used to perpetrate the fraud, which is encrypted, password-locked, access-logged, and access is restricted to high-ranking Cons only.

Lobbiests

Lobbying big corps. should be illegal simple as that. All these so called Politian's are after nothing more than the bottom line...MONEY in there pockets as easily as they can get it. Do as I say not as I do is what the rest of us have to abide by. Just make lobbying illegal and put a stop to the corruption in politics....

this shows the rational approach... For every upside, there is a downside... And the downside will severely affect British Columbians, and the upside won't really have much affect on us, as British Columbians... So why are we trying to provide energy to the world at our own expense and at the expense of our coastline?  Why?

Christy Clark Enbridge story

So, Christy Clark DIDN'T lobby for . She was Merely 50% OWNER, PRINCIPAL & DIRECTOR with HUBBY in firm that did. OKAY!

THE INCONVENIENT TRUTH IS derived income from family firm that lobbied for & now she's pushing pipeline.  Begs the question whether her so-called tough-line '5 conditions' all a shame and clever PR ploy prearranged to soft-sell the Northern Gateway while feigning appearance of fairness.

Machiavelli, move over.

Still needs to be investigated

She has a personality?

Enbridge impact on BC Ferries

Seeing the connection between Christy and Enbridge, even if it's in the past, makes me wonder about all the ferry cutbacks.

1700 routes cut even though it's clear there will be harmful economic impacts on coastal BC. Is it possible that the Ferries are being cut to facilitate LNG and oil tankers travels in both the Northern and Southern ferry routes?

it would explain the intransigence of Clark and Stone with regard to looking at the impact of the ferry cuts.

Christy Clark vs BC teachers

Another example that shows that Clark doesn't care about the citizens in BC is her attacks against BC teachers. She's cutting back again on school funding while slagging the teachers and their union resulting in the current strike. She insists classes should be as high as 33 students. Aid for disabled students is cut. All the while she sends her kid to private school and her government pays 50% of his tuition at the private school. That school has a ratio of students to teachers that way lower and they have all the resources money can buy.

Why is it than when people get rich they aren't satisfied with being rich and while enjoying all the obvious perks that come with money? Why do they feel the need to attack the less fortunate and take away things that'll drive them even further down the financial ladder?
