Dr. Gabor Maté and naturopath launch innovative addiction recovery program

Dr. Gabor Maté will collaborate with naturopathic doctor, Sat Dharam Kaur ND and yoga experts Yogi Amandeep Singh and Sat Kaur Khalsa in teaching an innovative approach to addiction recovery. The program utilizes ancient Kundalini Yoga techniques coupled with an advanced nutritional and dietary approach aimed at balancing brain chemistry and glandular function.

The launch for the team’s four weekend program occurs Monday Jan 9, from 7-9 pm at the Unitarian Church at 949 W 49th Ave in Vancouver.  At this event, Dr. Maté will lecture on “Who We are When We are Not Addicted – the Possible Human”, followed by a book-signing for his bestselling book, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts. Tickets are available at Banyen Books, www.banyen.com 604-737-8858 or at the door, for $11.

The four weekend program, called Beyond Addiction: The Yogic Path to Recovery, is slated to run Jan 20-22, Feb 17-19, Mar 23-25 and Apr 27-29, 2012, and is open to individuals desiring to change addictive behaviour patterns, health professionals, and yoga teachers. The team will be training yoga teachers to run the program as a 16 week series at several locations in Vancouver on an ongoing basis, creating a network of support across the city for those in recovery. James Fairbanks, the clinical manager of Kinghaven Treatment Centre in Abbotsford plans to run a shortened version of the program as a pilot project at the Kinghaven facility later in 2012.

Dr. Kaur, the originator of the program, says, “We are creating a research based program that can be implemented in treatment centres across the country. The Kundalini Yoga practices in the Beyond Addiction program help to nourish one’s relationship with one’s essential spiritual identity and develop inner strength in a supportive group setting so that the compulsion for an external substance or behaviour is relieved.”

A team of researchers, headed by Julia Wilson, will evaluate the effectiveness of the program and publish the results of their study. This will be one of the first research studies evaluating the effectiveness of a Kundalini Yoga based recovery program on substance abuse and addiction.
