Greentea Shiratama Azuki Premium Crepe from Mazazu Crepe

Food courts usually present predictable offerings.  I mean, you know there will be one of those Japanese stir-fry places, one of those bland salad bars, and a place with lukewarm pizza slices.  The food court at Aberdeen, however, presents a great variety of options from Hong Kong style café treats to Vietnamese subs.  After all, who could forget the spawning ground for Beard Papa’s delightful cream puffs?  While the lines at Beard Papa’s have now dissipated, there are so many other wonderful places in their food court waiting to be discovered.   Here are a few outstanding things that make me go “mmm…” at Aberdeen Centre’s Food Court.  If there’s anything you feel I’ve missed, feel free to log in to Vancouver Observer and leave a comment!

Wo Fung Dessert

Ironic, isn’t it, that a place called Wo Fung Dessert is known for their chicken wings? The wings come out piping hot from the fryer, crisp, crunchy and dusted in secret spices.  They are a nice, substantial size with lots of meat on the bone; no puny little wingettes here that are finished off in two bites.

The only thing about this place is that the line up can reach astounding proportions as their tiny kitchen becomes quickly swamped.  Your proof that you are getting good wings, however, is the fact that people are willing to patiently stand in line for a long time.

8 Juice

When I drink juice, I want it fresh.  When I have bubble tea, I can’t stand the powdered stuff that some places use, so I try my best to find places that only use real stuff.  You can tell 8 Juice uses the real thing because of the piles of fruit that the employees skillfully manoeuver around as they fill your order.  I can’t live without the #1 House Special which is a mango lover’s dream concoction.  It’s a fantastic combination of coconut milk, real mango juice, sour grapefruit strands and chewy mango jelly bits.

Mazazu Crepe

Mazazu Crepe (translation: Mother’s Crepe) is the newest addition to Aberdeen’s food court which opened about a month ago.  Their freshly cooked crepes come out soft and chewy and are stuffed with all kinds of interesting and unusual goodies such as sausage and Dijon mustard or tuna salad and egg.  Their dessert crepes are just as good, boasting of surprising combinations that you could only get in Japan like green tea ice cream, mochi and red bean.  Any place that combines cheesecake, fresh strawberries and caramel sauce inside a crepe and finishes it off with ice cream is on my good list!  Although they present a challenge to eat, it’s a tasty, satisfying experience to have one of these.
