2010 Aboriginal Pavilion Reaches Milestone with Completion of Phase One of Construction

Press Release
Dec 7th, 2009

Today, the Four Host Nations offered a sneak-peek of the 2010 Aboriginal Pavilion, which will use the latest technology to showcase the 'best of the best' of Aboriginal talent at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

"The Pavilion is our showcase to the world," said Tewanee Joseph, CEO of the Four Host First Nations Society. "In two months we will open our doors to the world and celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of Aboriginal peoples across Canada. Today we are proud to share a small glimpse of what visitors will experience when they come to our Pavilion."

The Pavilion is located on the plaza of the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in downtown Vancouver - only steps away from BC Place Stadium and Canada Hockey Place.

Aboriginal leaders, distinguished guests and members of the media were given a guided tour of the Pavilion to mark the completion of construction on the Coast Salish longhouse-style superstructure, which will house a 1,500 square-foot trading post and an elders' lounge. Following the Games, the longhouse structure will be relocated as a permanent legacy.

Temporary Hostel to Open December 4 for Visitors and Workers in Vancouver during 2010 Winter Games

Press Release
Nov 26th, 2009

The temporary hostel for the 2010 Winter Games will open its doors next week at the Eldorado Hotel in east Vancouver to provide low-cost accommodations for people seeking Games-related employment or youth travellers on a limited budget coming to take part in the celebrations.

This project is another way the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) is delivering on the Inner-City Inclusive Commitments - developed during the bid for the Games - to provide alternative forms of temporary accommodation for Games visitors.

"There's a lot of excitement across Canada about the coming Games and we expect many travellers, especially young people, will start arriving in our city in the coming weeks without a place to stay," explained Donna Wilson, VANOC's executive vice president, people and sustainability. "This hostel will provide them with an affordable place to bed down for the night without impacting the city's shelters or low-income housing, which is a commitment we made during the bid phase for the 2010 Winter Games."

VANOC Confirms Board Leadership and Updates on Progress and Remaining Challenges

Press Release
Nov 19th, 2009

The board of directors for the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) received a comprehensive update on Games-time planning today, including the need for more volunteers with accommodation in the Sea to Sky region and expanded traffic management plans to encourage the public to leave vehicles at home and use alternative forms of transportation leading up to and during the Games.

With close to 12 weeks to go until the start of the Games, Vancouver 2010 still needs at least 750 people with accommodation in the Sea to Sky region to donate their time and abilities to hosting the world’s top winter athletes and spectators from around the globe. Volunteer positions at Whistler-area venues include: drivers, reservation assistants, technology positions for IT and helpdesk specialists, press and photo assistants, and photo runners. Applications can be made online at www.vancouver2010.com.

Vancouver 2010 Phase 3 Ticket Sales Postponed to November 14

Press Release
Nov 9th, 2009

Will the Olympics be a hey day for Vancouver or a spending spree that leaves a legacy of deep debt?

Visitors hoping to purchase Olympic and Paralympic tickets on Saturday at www.vancouver2010.com were not able to access the site as previously planned and as a result, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) has made the decision to postpone the start of Phase 3 ticket sales to Saturday, November 14 at 10am Pacific Time.

Tickets.com, the Official ticket service provider for Vancouver 2010, experienced difficulties with the configuration between the virtual waiting room and the ticketing transaction site.

“On behalf of Tickets.com, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience visitors to the Vancouver 2010 ticketing site experienced this morning,” said Larry Witherspoon, CEO, Tickets.com. “Our team is working hard to resolve the issue and appreciate the patience of Canadian Olympic and Paralympic fans.”
