BC Lions take home title as Canadian team of the year
In a Canadian Press survey, sports editors and broadcasters across the country named the BC Lions 2011's team of the year – ahead of the Vancouver Canucks.
In the most recent year-end survey from the Canadian Press, sports desks across the country selected CFL Grey Cup champions the BC Lions as the 2011 team of the year.
Despite a slow start to the season -- opening with five straight losses -- the Lions made a triumphant comeback, winning 12 of their final 13 games and taking home the Cup with a 34-23 victory against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
According to the CP survey, which asked Canadian sports editors and broadcasters to vote for the top teams, the Lions weren't the only Vancouver athletes making headlines this year. The Vancouver Canucks took the second spot on the list, after a nail-biting series in the Stanley Cup finals.
Earlier this week, Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan was named male athlete of the year and freestyle skier Jennifer Heil was awarded the top female honours.
