Tides thrust into #OccupyWallStreet spotlight

Tides, a San Francisco-based nonprofit, has been thrust into the spotlight by reports and rumours about billionaire investor George Soros helping to fund the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh said on his show last that billionaire investor George Soros was funding the movement. Reuters later published “Who’s Behind the Wall Street Protests”, claiming that Soros was "the mystery backer: of the Occupy Wall Street protests because he gave $3.5 million to the Tides Foundation in recent years, and Tides has given grants to Adbusters, the Vancouver-based media foundation which has been credited with sparking the protests.

The connection, which was “roundly mocked” in media circles, has since been retracted.  But now everyone is curious about the Tides Center. Who are they, and what do they do?
What is Tides?

George Soros has been blasted in the right-wing media for having donated in the past to organizations such as MoveOn.org. He was also an early supporter of current president Barack Obama, and is often insulted by Republican commentator Glenn Beck as a "Progressive Puppet Master".
