Salish Sea at highest risk of an oil spill in Canada
Georgia Strait Alliance responds to the Tanker Safety Expert Panel report.
VANCOUVER, BC (December 3, 2013) ─ Commenting on the publication today by Transport Canada of the Tanker Safety Expert Panel's report on Canada's ship-source oil spill preparedness and response regime, Alexandra Woodsworth, Energy and Shipping Campaigner at Georgia Strait Alliance said:
"Today’s report reveals that the Salish Sea is already in the highest risk category for an oil spill in Canada – without considering the sixfold increase in tankers that would ply these waters if the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion proposal is approved. It’s also the latest in a long line of official warnings that we are woefully unprepared to deal with a worst-case scenario spill."
She continued, "When it comes to oil spill response, we need prevention because there is no cure. And the best way to minimize the risk of polluting our waters is to stand up for our coast and our communities and say no to Kinder Morgan."
