Oscar Wilde Awards celebrate Irish culture on the West Coast

In the past year, more Irish natives than ever before have moved to Vancouver, a
city of culture, scenic beauty and a mild climate. In fact, the Irish are so welcome
that B.C. will now accept an Irish driving license without a test.
Fellow countryman, Oscar Wilde toured North America in 1882, at the start of which he is reputed to have said, to a customs officer, “I have nothing to declare except my genius.”
The Irish in Vancouver might like to take note that Oscar Wilde is still being
celebrated on the West Coast of North America, in the guise of the Oscar Wilde
Awards, presented by the US-Irish Alliance to directors and actors who have contributed their own genius to making movies in 2015.
The award ceremony takes place this Friday, February 25th at Bad Robot in Santa
Monica. Oscar Wilde awards will be presented to Daisy Ridley, of “Star Wars: The
Force Awakens,” Sarah Greene, of “Penny Dreadful,” James Corden, host of “The Late
Late Show,” and Lenny Abrahamson, director of “Room.”
This is the eleventh annual Oscar Wilde award ceremony, which has honoured several Canadians in the past and is the inspiration of Trina Vargo, who to continues to build bridges to Ireland.
