Push Back in the Media: Weekly News Update from OpenMedia.ca
Hi I'm Lindsey and this is your weekly news update from OpenMedia.ca.
This week, thanks to your contributions, we're launching a tool that will help Canadians push back against Big Telecom's media spin.
As some of you know, telecom lobbyists have been visiting us on social media, often without identifying themselves, and trying to get Canadians to believe that there's nothing wrong with our cell phone market. They've also come out with reports that include cherry-picked data that makes it seem like all is well.
Why would they do this? They have the most to lose in our push for more choice and affordability in the cell phone market. As Canadians get closer and closer to getting the CRTC and Industry Canada to make the necessary bold moves towards fixing the market, Big Telecom loses more and more control over our communications, including how much we pay and how much they can get away with.
Since they're pushing hard to change the story, we're giving Canadians the tools to push back. We're asking you to visit openmedia.org/newspaper, and write a letter about the broken cell phone market to the editor of your local papers.
Many of you have told your cell phone horror stories, more have sent our citizen-powered study to your MPs, and even more have signed the DemandChoice.ca petition—now it's time to take the next step. Let's get loud.
That webpage again is openmedia.org/newspaper. Check it out and make yourself heard, for the sake of Canada's digital future.
For the Internet, this is Lindsey with OpenMedia.ca signing off.
