Five Vancouver restaurant faves from QMUNITY's Dara Parker
Dara Parker has a busy life, making Vancouver a better place through her work at Qmmunity. But where does one of Vancouver's leading humanitarians like to eat out? Here's her list:
Grounds For Coffee, 2565 Alma Street
When it comes to cinnamon buns, Dara says “I’m kinda obsessed.” When she moved to Vancouver to pursue her Masters degree in Urban Planning, she lived in the neighbourhood and has been going for her cinnamon bun fix ever since. “I won’t eat any other cinnamon bun now. Everything else is a waste of time.”
Cuchillo, 261 Powell Street
Dara’s passport gets quite a workout. She has visited more than 45 countries around the world and loves learning about new cultures. “How we eat (in North America) is so isolated”, Dara says, which explains why she enjoys the shared tables at Cuchillo. “It’s the community developer in me”. The food is “fresh and good and it’s not expensive”.
Legendary Noodle, 1074 Denman Street
A long-time favourite for Dara is Legendary Noodle on Denman Street. She has been going there since 2007. “It’s always packed, the atmosphere is cute and it feels like an authentic noodle house”. Her favourite dish is the “melt in your mouth” Dao Xiao Mian noodles with beef brisket.
Nook, 781 Denman Street
“Pizza is my favourite food”, say Dara, “I could eat it almost every day”. The ricotta pizza from Nook is a stand-out for her. “I couldn’t stop talking about it for 2 days.”
Shabusen Yakiniku, 755 Burrard, 2nd Floor
“I adore sushi”, Dara proclaims. With a menu that includes 9 protein options you cook on your table-top bbq plus a full sushi and sashimi menu, diversity is the name of the game here. Dara likes to bring out-of-town visitors here. “It’s a fun place to bring them. There is a high level of energy and it’s fun to sit in the wooden boats.”
QMUNITY is a resource centre for British Columbia’s LGBTQ community. Dara has been the Executive Director since May of 2012. “We envision a world where all queer people are included and free from discrimination” says Dara. QMUNITY is holding Stack The Rack, a wine tasting and auction on October 9th ,2013 at the Rosewood Hotel Georgia.
