Wolf Circus: jewelry without boundaries by Fiona Morrison
Fiona Morrison has a personal definition for badass: those that do what they love and do it ruthlessly. They may be a math genius, snowboarder or business owner, but they attack their craft wholeheartedly. Morrison is the founder and designer of Wolf Circus: hand-made jewelry for the beautiful, brainy, bold and badass. With an artist’s eye and entrepreneurial spirit, she creates mood-lifters and conversation-starters.
Morrison just finished a photoshoot and apologizes for being late and she flops down on a bed in her cozy Vancouver apartment. Raised in Victoria BC, she hopes this city will bring inspiration and new opportunities. Barefaced, hair pulled back and wearing a simple striped tee, her energy was contagious even over Skype.
“I used to have this old bullet necklace and I remember walking into class, and for forty-five minutes we talked about World Wars and where the piece might have come from,” says Morrison, who loves it when jewelry tells a story.
Wolf Circus was no accident. A business student at the University of Victoria, Morrison always intended to build a company. Noticing a lack of affordable and edgy accessories in Victoria, she designed Wolf Circus to be accessible and unique: “I personally love jewelry but to a certain extent, I want to buy three pieces not just one”.
On impulse, Morrison purchased materials she couldn’t afford and hoped to make some money back. Those initial steps were the hardest, but the risk has paid off. Wolf Circus recently celebrated its first birthday and thrives with the introduction of Gypsy Riot: high-end jewelry with a simple aesthetic that uses gold or silver plated hardware and cluster crystals.
Morrison sources materials from around the world: crystals from Brazil, vintage pendants from New York and charms from the local bead store. She designs necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings and headwear for both women and men. Inspired by personal style and shaped by mood, Morrison creates whenever inspiration hits: “If someone said to me you can only make 20 pieces a season I would quit my job”. New styles include delicate fishbone chains, breastplates made of copper and brass and chunky crystal rings.
Wolf Circus is about letting your inner light shine through. When she wakes up feeling like a rockstar, Morrison puts a skull necklace overtop a Led Zeppelin t-shirt. Some student customers even use their monocle pendants to read cue cards during exams. What Morrison loves most about jewelry is that it’s always a cause for compliments.
When she isn’t designing, crafting, marketing, or styling, Morrison is a bonafide Vancouver Island girl: exploring the seaside, snowboarding or hiking. When there is work to be done, she makes coffee and a playlist of Simon & Garfunkel, Fleetwood Mac and Tallest Man on Earth. Preparing for a semester studying in Stockholm, Morrison is a living example of her brand: beautiful, brainy, bold and badass.
