Grassroots Theatre Production Grows Local Talent
Conceived in the studios, cellars and back alleys of East Vancouver, The Valley of Ashes was first staged on two snowy November evenings in 2007 to sold out audiences. Back by popular demand, as they say, this production is the cream of some of the brilliant, creative work that goes on in our very own neighbourhoods. These performers, musicians, dancers, puppeteers, storytellers, visual and digital media artists, are often traveling great distances to showcase their talents on international stages, sowing magic beanstalk seeds in fertile ground all across lands afar. We invite you to share this magic with us during one of our four performances May 16 until May 18. Show times are at 8pm (Matinee Sunday, 3pm) at the Ukrainian Hall (805 E Pender).
The story follows a young boy with a flower pot strapped to his back on a journey through strange and foreign lands in search of a place where his potted flower will bloom.
In this production the artwork of Jordan Bent comes to life. Giant puppets mingle and dance with gangs of choreographed miners. Flying by red balloons and patchwork quilts, a ship of merry making revelers will pass over the heads of the audience. Between two mysterious towns masked characters float between roles and realities. Video work and projections by Reel Youth/Mobius Media weave in and out of the play, taking viewers on an ever more extraordinary depths of experience. Live music by Tarran the Tailor, Maria in the Shower a host of other mischief makers provide the soundtrack for our journeys.
There will be gypsy stompin’ dance parties to follow the Friday and Saturday night shows. This production is suitable for all ages. Plenty of space on the comfortable cushioned floor down in front for the little ones.
