The 5 Minute Film Contest (5MFC) is a program of the Powell River Film Festival, for students under the age of 19 to submit their original work.

For the past twelve years every February, the Powell River Film Festival has showcased independent award-winning films and filmmakers. The newest and best feature films, documentaries and shorts, selected from Canada and beyond, often can only be seen through festival exposure.

The 13th edition of the annual Powell River Film Festival, operated by the Friends of Film Society of Powell River (a registered non-profit society) will run from February 12 to 16, 2014  and will present six original feature films and six documentary films (see list here).

The Festival also supports local independent filmmakers and when possible, screens their work during the festival. At the “Adventures in Film Camp”, students learn about filmmaking from local talent and discuss important social issues. The school festival is made available to all students in the regional district.

Over the years the festival audience has grown from 270 people in 2002 to over 3,500 attending in recent years, attracting people from Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, as well as many local supporters.

2013 brought a big change to the film festival with the move to the historic Patricia Theatre, the longest standing, continuously running movie house in Canada. The Arts Mosaic, festival receptions and other activities will continue to be held at the Dwight Hall in the historic district of Townsite.
