Film night supports young artists and social change
Reel Causes hosts exclusive preview of Pirates of Salé in support of ArtQuake and social causes through film.

An evening of art, film, discussion and inspiration next week explores the power of young artists to affect social change on the world around them.
‘The Art of Progress‘, June 18 in the Woodward's district, focuses on the work of ArtQuake, a Vancouver-based youth-led movement that is using art to shake up the roots of democracy. The exclusive Vancouver preview of the internationally acclaimed documentary, Pirates of Salé is presented by Reel Causes, a non-profit group that hosts social film screenings to connect audiences with filmmakers and organizations working to address those causes.
Young artists are often powerful catalysts for social change, according to Dana DeKoven, Reel Causes president.
“By presenting a bold and viscerally different perspective on the world we know, their work can provide clarity on the world we want. The Art of Progress will illuminate how this can happen at both a local and global level.”
Filmed in the seaside city of Salé, on the edge of some of the country’s poorest slums, the film follows the transformation of four young Moroccan acrobats as they journey toward careers with the country’s first professional circus troupe.
Following the screening ArtQuake will host a panel discussion on art as social action.
