Jessica Beagley's child abuse trial begins

In a room full of jurors, the video played. The internationally-seen footage of the Alaskan mother who squirted hot sauce in the boy's mouth for misbehaving at school was shown again yesterday during the woman's first day of trial on misdemeanour child abuse charges.

Jessica Beagley and her police officer husband adopted the boy and his twin brother from a Russian orphanage after the Russian investigators found the kids sleeping on shelves and living in a shack, reports CBC News.

The couple, who have four children of their own, thought that "this was their chance to make a difference in [their] lives."

The footage was first aired on "Dr. Phil" as part of the show's November episode, "Mommy Confessions." The video, along with a voice clip of the boy screaming while being forced to take a cold shower, was reviewed at yesterday's trial.

Beagle's lawyer William Ingaldson claimed that this was the only way she could discipline the child as conventional methods didn't work on him.
