Gun death in downtown Vancouver: suspected gang execution

Photos by David P. Ball

A brazen, public execution-style shooting in the Sheraton Wall Centre's posh Bar One restaurant last night marked Vancouver's first homicide of 2012, but police told the Vancouver Observer that the coroner has delayed identifying the victim until tomorrow.

A man – identified by police as being “in his 20's” – was reportedly shot at close range in the face several times by an acquaintance, shattering an exterior window, reports say. Although the Vancouver Police Department is not releasing any further information, the victim was reported as 36-year old Sandip (Dip) Duhre, according to Kim Bolan of the Vancouver Sun. Duhre is an alleged long-time gangster, who has had previous attempts on his life.

The man – dressed in jeans and a navy blue and red sweater – was shot at roughly 8:45 p.m. last night in the busy restaurant, and his body was visible as it lay near the bullet-punctured window.

Police made no arrests yet in the case, but spent the night investigating the scene and canvassing potential witnesses. They said it was too soon to say if the shooting was related to organized crime, but that it appeared to be targeted.
