Motorcyclist dies in collision with minivan

Vancouver Police are investigating the city's fifth traffic fatality of 2011 after a motorcycle and a minivan collided earlier this evening, killing the rider.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., a 27 year old man riding his motorcycle eastbound along South West Marine Drive, collided with a minivan making a left turn from Kullahun Drive to go westbound. The force of the collision propelled the rider into the minivan, fatally injuring the man. Tragically, he died a short time later on the way to hospital. The driver of the minivan was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Investigators are looking into several witness accounts of a motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed along South West Marine Drive shortly before the collision occurred.

The identity of the victim is being withheld as efforts to notify next of kin are being made.

Vancouver Police remain on scene at this hour and have closed South West Marine Drive to traffic in both directions as they complete their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the VPD Collision Investigation Unit at 604-717-3012.
