Musicians and media now flying out of St. John's, after temporary flight delays due to Icelandic volcanic eruption
West Jet reports that they've released all flights leaving St. John's. The delay in air traffic as a result of volcanic ash reported this morning was only temporary, the airline said.
The New York Times reported today that air transportation authorities hammered out a proposal to resume air traffic in Europe, where thousands have been stranded for the last few days. Authorities carved out three zones, including a "no-fly zone", to deal with the presence of volcanic ash over the continent. From the Times:
With thousands of passengers still stranded and airlines bleeding money, European governments still faced criticism over the economic toll of their seemingly ponderous response.
The International Air Transport Association, an airline industry group, criticized what it called a “lack of leadership” by European governments faced with an aviation shutdown on an unparalleled continental scale. The disruption, caused by high-altitude ash from the volcano, has spread far and wide, affecting the transportation of everything from Kenyan roses, usually sent by air to Europe, to British troops stuck in transit from tours in Afghanistan..."
