Gastown's decked out for the holidays

Gastown's getting decked out for the holidays. Here's the latest from a press release sent to us by Chad Falkenberg:

Gastown just got a little bit cooler through a mini-makeover for the holidays, with the help of two professional interior designers who have demonstrated that holiday decorating need not be traditional and cliché.

Focusing on a uniquely “Vancouver” approach to holiday decorating, Chad Falkenberg and Kelly Reynolds have teamed up to donate their time to decorating several Maple Square area businesses including Roden Gray, L’Abattoir, Sea Monstr Sushi and Strada Cycles in a way that reflects the West Coast, not the North Pole.

“Let’s face it, the holidays in Vancouver are not all about snowmen and Bing Crosby,” said Chad.  “While we can enjoy many of the icons of the season, we can also celebrate things that are distinctly West Coast -- like pine and cedar boughs, bare twigs, holly and, of course, twinkling lights and wrapped presents.”

The team’s designs are in step with the modern character of Gastown and provide some great inspiration and ideas for people looking for updated ways to decorate at home.

“Of course not everyone is going to have the space to place 100 ribbon wrapped boxes cascading from their ceiling, but there’s no reason the idea couldn’t be scaled down to work over a dining room table or in an entry hallway,” said Kelly.

The designers worked hard to create impact with installations that reflect each merchant’s brand and respect the spaces without frustrating the customer or creating clutter. Examples include the silver wreath made of Sapporo beer cans seen at Sea Monstr Sushi; arched plum trees with white lights at Roden Gray; and cellophane wrapped fixies at Strada Cycles – all made possible with support services provided by Ryan Levy, Lan Nguyen of Inside Out Style and Kenton Lepp of Moosehead Contracting.

“It feels good to bring together great people at this time of year to help out some local merchants by taking “decorate for holidays” off their lengthy list of things to do,” said Chad.

Making impressive waves in the burgeoning Vancouver design scene, Chad and Kelly have been building their reputations for striking, modern design solutions around the city for the past five years, working with local design icons such as Robert Bailey as well as on independent projects.  The two will be launching a joint business in the New Year.
