Community recipe: "Abed is Batman now" granola

"Abed is Batman now."

Every time I think of that line from Community, I giggle. Honestly. The very idea of using a one-line personalized autograph from Christian Bale to endorse Abed as the new Batman is exactly what "Trobed" is all about.

And what better to offer today’s man-child superhero on the go than cereal? This recipe is easy, versatile, and cheap. In other words, Troy and Abed could make it. Well, maybe Troy. Should probably just get Annie.

You can switch the fruit and vary the nuts as you please; just follow procedure and you’ll be good.

Group 1:
4 cups rolled oats
2 cups almonds
1 cup pumpkin seeds
¼ cup flax seeds (optional)
½ cup brown sugar
pinch salt

Group 2:
½ cup honey
½ cup canola oil
1 teaspoon vanilla

Group 3:
1 cup dried apple slices
1 cup dried cranberries
¼ cup candied ginger (optional)

1 – Pre-heat your oven to 350F. Combine Group 1 in a bowl so that they are evenly-distributed.

2 – Combine Group 2 in a saucepan and bring to a light boil over medium heat. (Watch out, because this will boil over and create a sticky, oily mess if ignored.) Pour the cooked mixture over the oat and nut mixture and stir until it is very evenly-coated. Don’t be afraid to use your hands, but be careful not to burn yourself.

3 – Spread the mixture onto a parchment-lined baking sheet in an even layer. Pack it down lightly to ensure more even cooking. Bake at 350F for about 45 minutes, mixing it every 10-15 minutes. Whenever you see the endges starting to brown, re-distribute the granola so the the stuff around the edges is towards the middle and the stuff in the middle gets a turn out towards the edges of the pan. You just want it to cook evenly. When the whole thing looks lightly toasted (but not burnt!), it’s done. Remove from the oven and cool to room temperature. (If you notice some of the pan is not toasty once you’ve cooled it, just pop it back in the oven for another 15.)

4 – While the granola cools, tackle Group 3. Dice the dried apples and ginger (if desired). Just cut them to your preference. Finally, mix everything together in a bowl and store in an airtight container. This stuff keeps for months. Well, I actually don’t know how long it really lasts because we always eat it before it can go stale.
