Galen Weston's hypocrisy: industrial food vs. farmer's market

I recently read an account of a small farmer who was required to attend a foodsafe course in order to be allowed to sell produce from her small farm to her neighbours. The woman presenting the course came from the city, set up her table in the community hall and proceeded to scold the local farmers for endangering their neighbours by using manure in their gardens. Then she went on to “educate” those present about the dangers of local water. Eventually someone lost patience and asked what she recommended drinking. Her answer? Soda pop. Please understand - this isn’t a rogue bureaucrat or an episode of candid camera. This is the person who decides if you get the privelage of selling healthy, natural food to the people in your community. 

At what point do the demands of “safety” become too much of a burden on our health? When government bureaucrats tell us that pop is better than BC water? Why does it feel like safety and health are so often pitted against each other these days? Certainly this is a human misperception and not an accurate reflection of the real world.
 
If safety and health are parallel issues, both deserving priority, then freedom must underpin them both. Freedom to choose according to your unique values and life experience. I believe that Weston the man comes by his biases honestly. And I endeavour to allow people their opinions. But Weston’s comment seen in context -- coming from the nation’s leading food industrialist - is more than an innocent mistake, or even an unseemly prejudice. It’s a glimpse of an ideology and a growing tactic used worldwide -- to use food regulation under the guise of safety to secure the concentration of food power. Beware.
