Board of Trade Co. fashion boutique opening party tomorrow
Chinatown’s latest addition is The Board of Trade Co, a concept clothing boutique that aims to highlight and support Vancouver’s growing creative community. Located at 227 Union Street, the boutique reflects the path this up-and-coming neighbourhood is taking towards becoming Vancouver’s next hotspot for young creatives.
“We made the decision to open the store here because we saw the community’s potential to grow,” says David Lin, co-owner with Eunice Quan. “So far our neighbourhood block parties and blog posts about the locals we’ve met have been well received. We plan on continuing to find new ways to build on our relationship with our neighbours and host events in which everyone can get involved.”
Lin and Quan, two of Vancouver’s youngest entrepreneurs, have been childhood friends since the age of 13. Lin has spent the past two years immersed within Singapore’s fashion industry, while Quan helped launch popular Gastown boutique OAK + FORT as the brand’s Creative Director. “People have definitely told us we’re crazy to start our own business,” laughs Quan. “But when you’re really passionate about your craft and there’s a positive movement behind it, sometimes you just have to take those risks for a bigger cause.”
The Board of Trade Co.'s dual concept allows the space to act as both a store and a showroom. Lin and Quan chose to highlight local and international labels such as Painkiller, Shake Appeal, Sifr and Qubisch because they feel the designers take creative risks to produce innovative apparel. By sharing the story behind each label, they hope that their customers will fall in love not only with each individual piece but with the entire brand.
September 17th will mark the the store's Grand Opening Party, featuring exhibitions and music from local artists Gene Doe, Christopher Shyr, Gypsy Market, The Lost Boys as well as visiting New York artist Jeffrey Robbins, who will be creating a live installation of art that will be completed at the opening.
