Abbotsford Designer KV BIJOU to be the Official Jewelry Supplier for Sundance Film Festival This Year

The Sundance Film Festival has a cult following with a big international and celebrity focus.

Just before Christmas I posted an article about local BC jewelry designers and in that post I included designs by KV BIJOU. At the time Kelsey Vanderhorst, the owner and designer of KV BIJOU, was very busy putting her creative eye to work.

She was dedicated to  designing a line of silver pendants to be presented to celebrities at this year’s 2010 Sundance Film Festival in Park City Utah. Kelsey and her husband are representing the line at the festival's gift lounge, hoping to sway  the likes of Katie Holmes, Natalie Portman, Jessica Alba, Kristen Stewart, Ben Affleck, Kate Hudson, Kevin Costner, Chace Crawford, Marisa Tomei, Tommy Lee Jones, Amy Adams, Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Dakota Fanning, James Franco, Ryan Reynolds, Rob Pattinson, Naomi Watts, Samuel L Jackson, and Malin Akerman among others.

I talked to Kelsey about the opportunities Sundance offers.

How did KV BIJOU receive the opportunity to be the official jewelry supplier for the festival?

I was approached by a company who puts on celebrity gifting suites for all sorts of events. Such as the Cannes Film Festival, Oscar Week, Miss America and a bunch of others. They asked if I'd be interested in working together, offered me exclusivity and asked me which event I'd be the most interested in. I chose Sundance and away we went. Apparently they heard of me through the department in their company that researches up-and-coming brands.

What is the inspiration behind the designs?

When I was designing these pieces, I wanted to keep my signature style but also do something that a variety of women would love. I didn't want to go too big, or too bold as it has to appeal to everyone. I wanted something high end with vibrant stones that would be unique and eye catching.

How many designs are there?

There are 4 designs in total. But one of those designs comes in 3 different colors making it more like 6 options for the stars to choose from. They will be available to the general public at Fusion Hair Salon in Abbotsford starting Jan 19th, available online via my website and in other retailers in Feb 2010.

Are all 150 necklaces handmade?

Yes they are handcrafted.

How are the pieces to be distributed? (Does each star choose the design they like or is it random?)

The stars will be able to come up to my booth at Sundance and pick their favorite design. My husband is accompanying me to help me run the booth. The lounge is 2 full days.

What are your hopes for KV BIJOU from Sundance?

I'm excited about the amount of exposure this event will bring me. There will be an In Touch Weekly feature and the opportunity to meet many a-list celebs in person is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I hope it can put myself on the map and get my small company some exposure in the US.
