Vancouver’s peripatetic Master Certified Coach: Juhree Zimmerman

From Dubai to Oslo to Jerusalem to Calgary, Juhree Zimmerman is a woman on the move. At home in Kitsilano, she's still in motion.  She takes me into  the kitchen, and from there we move to the office to get a file she wants to show me. We stop by the dining room table to check something on the laptop and end up in the living room for a look at a map of Fort Madison, Iowa, where she was born.

Oh yes, then coffee—it’s back to the kitchen.  

Former nurse, certified psychologist, and senior administrator in the Albertan and British Columbian Ministries of Health, Zimmerman is a dynamic spouse, mom, and peripatetic grandmother. A Master Certified Coach, she is a senior faculty member for both Coaches Training Institute and the Center for Right Relationship.

She not only does these things well—she does them with grace and aplomb.

Today, she’s busy getting ready for a course she’s teaching in Seattle the second weekend of September: Organization and Relationship Systems Coaching Fundamentals.

“ORSC. It’s an awkward acronym,” Zimmerman laughs. It’s a set of skills and tools designed for organizational development professionals and coaches to work with teams, couples, and families.  “A blend of systems theory, Taoist and Buddhist teachings, positive psychology, quantum physics, and coaching."

“What I love about ORSC is how it brings tools and techniques from other work into the frame of everybody has a piece of the truth, rather than having to have an Identified Patient,” which is often the case in mental health work. “Nobody has to be sick or in trouble. Though, to be sure, usually there is some point of pain in a business or organization, not always. Some teams just want to improve how they’re doing things.

“When teams that have a job to do together--- like provincial health care---can get along better, they’re more effective. And that has an impact on health care in a large region. Better teamwork in banks improves efficiency in dealing with the management of people’s finances.”

Because the quality of relationships between people at work has such a wide-ranging impact, Zimmerman is eager to spread the word.

“I wish I knew how to do it other than by word of mouth. I talk to senior people in organizations. I attend conferences, give presentations, belong to on-line communities like LinkedIn. And yet it’s still a challenge—getting teams to accept that they need some fine-tuning before it gets to the place where people are being fired.”

And what is Juhree’s highest hope for the practitioners she trains?

“That everyone who is trained in ORSC has the capacity and the opportunity to work with the people they want to serve. Whether it’s the oil industry, families, the government. It’s about working with the personality that is created by the system.

"That is the ORSC approach—to listen to what the system is saying, not just the individuals. It may not be immediately apparent. Teams are good at throwing a rug over the proverbial elephant in the room and then trying to walk on top it.

“You have to listen with all the senses, always looking and feeling for what’s being communicated. And it might not be what people have been saying, but it will come out—whatever it is that needs to be explored, whatever truth that needs to be revealed—and once that happens, a team can figure out how to deal with it and then how they want to move forward.”
