Yoga with belugas for World Oceans Day at the Vancouver Aquarium

Why do you love Vancouver?

Maybe it’s the mountains, or maybe it’s the fact that the city is surrounded by ocean. Whether you’re born and raised on the West Coast and the sea is second nature to you, or you come from the inland and the sea is a treat you’re not used to, there’s a sense of appreciation in everyone for that vast, briny span of water.

Ocean

If you haven’t yet heard, June 8th is World Oceans Day and cities all over the world are holding celebrations in honor of it. One in particular that caught my eye was Vancouver Aquarium’s Yoga with Belugas. In a city where yoga is trendy and you’re as likely to see yoga pants as often as you are the ocean, why not combine the two?

The day begins with a Beluga and yoga session led by yogi, ocean lover, and blissologist, Eoin Finn. As you’re doing your downward facing dog, cobra and child’s pose, majestic belugas will be swimming in the background. Following your energizing yoga workshop will be a healthy breakfast provided by Choices Markets

Global hip-hop and organic beats from DJ Tspoon (Delhi 2 Dublin), Rupinder Sidhu (Banyen Roots), and Ndidi Cascade will be playing as you mix and mingle with everyone in the room over a cup of organic coffee.

From 11AM to 4PM there will be short presentations and hands on activities reflecting the day’s theme of “Five things you can do to protect the ocean.” Many topics are covered, such as why choosing Ocean Wise seafood is important, and how noise is affecting marine life.

Like any celebration, there will of course be cake, so make sure you stick around for a piece of the special World Oceans Day dessert.

This event is a collaboration between WWF Canada, SeaChoice and the Vancouver Aquarium. Tickets are $50 and can be bought online.

If you’re extra keen on World Oceans Day and have ever had Chef Ned Bell’s food, consider heading to an ocean-friendly dinner at Yew Restaurant in the Four Season’s Hotel. Tickets are $160, which includes dinner, wine, tax and gratuity. E-mail [email protected] or call 604-609-5480 to reserve your spot for a dinner that is bound to be delicious, with food inspired from oceans of the world.

For more details on both events check out Vancouver Aquarium’s website.

“I had never even seen it until last year. I was completely blown away. There is nothing quite like swimming in the tide and having the waves crash into you. What power!”

“I grew up very near the Atlantic Ocean. Now I live a thousand miles away and have not been back in years. I miss the ocean every day like a lost love. I used to go to the beach all the time and would throw all my troubles out to sea. Just thinking about it I can almost taste the salty spray and hear the sandpipers...”
