The Lorax gets kids to go green with eco-screening

In honour of the premiere of the new animated feature film, The Lorax, a local Vancouver cinema is organizing a sustainable screening and a contest for kids to encourage green living.
The well-known story from Dr. Seuss tackles the dangers and impacts of industrialized society on the environment, following the lovable Lorax character in his struggle to save the trees from destruction. The film’s release comes at an ideal moment, with growing concern over global warming and increasing action on environmental issues—particularly in B.C.
To tie in with the film’s obvious environmental themes, the independent Dunbar Theatre is partnering with local company BSI Biodegradable Solutions to put on an eco-screening for the premiere on Friday, March 2nd.
For the special showing, the venue is moving to compostable concession supplies and also reducing their carbon footprint through offsets. Moviegoers can also bring their own containers for popcorn and drinks.
In advance of Friday’s screening, the local businesses are also trying to help educate kids about sustainability with their “Go Green and See Orange” contest. Children can enter to win free tickets to the show, by submitting a 50-word description of how they can reduce waste and packaging use at home or at school.
The “Go Green and See Orange” contest closes on Feb. 29, 2012. For more details on the contest and screening, click here.
