Vancouver's birthday is coming up, and their birthday party looks amazing (See Dan Mangan for free). Be sure to check out the three day event in Stanley Park as well as the other festivals going on. Did I mention there's a beer festival? Have fun.
1. Summer Live – Vancouver's 125th Anniversary Festival
July 8–10 | Brockton Oval in Stanley Park | Free!
Celebrate Vancouver's 125th birthday with this 3-day festival featuring over 180 performances and activities. Performers include the New Pornographers, Mother Mother, Daniel Wesley, Dan Mangan, Said the Whale and more. Also see a diverse showcase by Public Dreams & the Dusty Flowerpot Caberet plus canoe races, storytelling and drum songs. See map & schedule for details.
2. Indian Summer Festival
July 7-17 | SFU Centre for the Arts | Varied $
Come to the 1st annual Indian Summer, an international festival of arts and ideas. Showcasing top talent from India - across music, dance, literature, film, cuisine, yoga and wellness - in conversation with Canadian counterparts. The Masala Bee is excited to hear the Bollywood sensation Tabu in conversation with Booker-winning author Yann Martel View Facebook event.
3. MEC Paddlefest Vancouver
July 10 | 9:30am-5:00pm | Jericho Sailing Centre | $5/free
If the heat gets too much for you (we can only hope), get out on (and in) the water at Jericho Sailing Centre. MEC will be there with cheap lessons, demos and lots of fun stuff for the kiddies.
Bhangra.me Curator Talk & Tour: Pioneering Bhangra

Join Guest Curator Naveen Girn in conversation with Paul Binning and Dr. Kanwaljit Neel – both founding members of Vancouver’s first Bhangra team, PAAR Club. They’ll talk about their experiences performing around the country (including the Montreal 76 Olympics and Spokane World’s Fair), as well how they used Bhangra as a tool for anti-racism, promote cultural understanding and furthering social justice and labour movements.
