FIFA World Cup Day 1: tragedy
Day 1 got off to a sad and tragic start with the public learning of the death of Nelson Mandela's grandaughter Zenani Mandela. The atmosphere of the crowd changed from sad to celebratory when the first game kicked off. The first half was quite dull besides Mexico's disallowed goal. The second half was much more lively and on the 55th minute Siphiwe Tshabalala sent the South African fans into a frenzy, but the Mexicans replied in the 80th minute when Rafa Marquez slotted home to silence the fans. South Africa were almost rewarded for their hard work in the 90th minute when Katlego Mphela was sent in and hit the outside of the post. Overall this was quite an entertaining opener for the World Cup.
The same could not be said for the Uruguay France game. There was not much in this game, the best chance coming early for France when Sidney Govou missed a tap in in front of the Uruguayan net. Diego Forlan was impressive but had no support from his teammates. This game ended quite silently except for a minor shout for handball by the French.
This Group has gotten off to a close start and looks to be heading to the last day of group play to decide the top 2 spots in the group.
