Last One standing hip hop battle throws down with international talent

Freestyling hip hop dancing at its finest: one on one competition.

Experiencing a hip hop battle is a must-do if you consider yourself as someone up on pop culture and a dance lover to boot. On Saturday Nov. 9, Abe and Lockin Kuan  present Last One Stands 2013: Hip-Hop, Locking, Popping All 1 on 1.  Last One Stands runs at the Chan Shun Concert Hall at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts with doors opening at 3:00 and the preliminary battles starting at 5:30.

“The judges are international dancers and deep in the scene,  renowned pioneers of the dance and champions from world-class battles. We have invited eight guests from France, Germany, Taiwan, USA, and Montreal," explained Boris Khramtsov, publicist for the event. “It’s the fourth year for the event so we’re getting a reputation."

The judges are: Hip-Hop Judge: Henry  Link  - Elite Force  USA; Locking Judge: Ill  Kozby from USA; Popping Judge: Walid from France

The battle guests include  popping guest: Greenteck (Mighty Zulu Kingz) from Montreal "Juste Debout 2013" Popping Champion (France); Franqey (LKS) from France, "K.O.D 2012 " Popping Champion (China).Hip-Hop guest:  Ben Wichert (Legion X) from Germany ,"Juste Debout 2012" Hip-Hop Champion (France) ; Junior  Bookie (Da Gentlemen) from Montreal Canada, "Last One Stands 2012" returning Hip-Hop Champion (Vancouver) . Locking Guest: Terry Lin (Steady Point) from Taiwan "Dance @ Live 2013" Champion (Taiwan).

“It’s all freestyle and one on one”, said Khramtsov. This means that all the dancers registered to compete will go up against one other dancer and then the judges will decide who wins the round and the winner will move on. All the dancing is improvised and made up on the spot.  There will be dancers from Edmonton, Calgary, Seattle, Portland as well as the lower Mainland participating.

“Last year, a record number of over 500 participants witnessed an amazing show as dancers brought new levels to this art. This event has gained vast international attention as the event footage has accumulated over 1,000,000 views worldwide, “shared Khramtsov. “ Nothing beats the live show, though.”

Indeed, skilled hip hop freestylers are not unlike jazz musicians interpreting the music in the moment requiring a deep love of groove and hours of practice in an art form that they love. Having a great DJ  is a necessity.  DJ Static -We Funk Radio does the honours with the event MC : Trevor - Groovy Gentlemen leading the proceedings.
