Martin Creed at the Rennie Collection
There’s nothing like a fun and fabulous art opening to take the edge off the ennui of cold, gray spring. Thank goodness Martin Creed threw some pink into the mix at the Rennie Collection last Saturday night.
Guests at an invitation-only launch of work by the UK artist fumbled their way through a room piled high with balloons: pink ones, and about 3,000 of them. Work No. 329 was like Playland or IKEA, and way too much fun.
Downstairs, an easily antagonized grand piano snapped at those who got too close, with a startling crash followed by an unsettling crescendo of jangled strings.
Upstairs, Work No. 1000: Brocolli prints sprouted in shiny happy multi-coloured multiples across the gallery walls.
Throughout, at regular intervals, young people sprinted by, as though running a race. This was, apparently, Work No. 850.
“Everything Is Going To Be Aright” said the neon sign by Creed blazing above the gallery’s rooftop garden, where people mingled and sipped champagne.
I smiled, wanting to believe it.
