After 11 years of bringing you local reporting, the team behind the Vancouver Observer has moved on to Canada's National Observer. You can follow Vancouver culture reporting over there from now on. Thank you for all your support over the years!

Why back the Vancouver Observer?

Why should I pay for what's free?

Because it isn't really free.  You're pretty smart, so you've figured out that the people behind the Vancouver Observer put in long days of research and writing to bring you the best reporting and news in the city. You're fair-minded, and you like to reward people when they work hard to provide something of value. You're probably a good tipper, too.

Why don't you just put up a paywall?

We’re instituting a pay-what-you-can model for those who believe stories can touch peoples' hearts and minds, people who see journalism as fundamental to preserving a healthy democracy.  Your continued support means the Vancouver Observer can afford to bring you stories that go deeper than daily journalism.

What does it mean to back the Vancouver Observer?

First and foremost, it means the Vancouver Observer's team of experienced reporters will have more capacity to hold government and business accountable.  It also means we'll be able to afford to do more and better coverage of local city politics, food and culture. Monthly backers will get exclusive behind-the-scenes content and free access to our live events, as well as freebies around town. (You keep meaning to go to the museum, so maybe a pair of tickets will encourage you.)

Why are monthly backers so important?

We want to keep delivering the in-depth news coverage Canada deserves for free. That’s why we’ve turned to Radiohead for our inspiration, rather than Wall Street Journal or the NY Times. Your continued support means we have monthly support for stories that might not get reported otherwise.  Back the Vancouver Observer today.

How can I update my payment or contact information?

Contact us by email to update your info.

Is there a minimum donation amount?

Our minimum one-time donation amount is ten bucks, for struggling students, artists and others who want to become more engaged with VO. For monthly backers, the minimum is $5 per month; that's $60 a year. We believe the right amount for most people to pay is $15 monthly - the price of a few coffees from Starbucks, yet worth so much more or a small cocktail at a pricey restaurant.  Every month you back the Vancouver Observer, you're building a sustainable foundation for important stories to be told by reporters you may turn to some day when you have a story that needs to find an audience.

What other membership categories do you have?

If you're a local business, we'd love to talk to you about branded content. Contact Janel or Anja, and let's work out how to help each other.
