Vancouver Board of Education to Vote on Budget Tonight

Vancouver’s Board of Education will approve its 2009-10 Preliminary Operating Budget during a special board meeting this evening. The preliminary budget reflects $7.12 million in spending cuts needed so that the school district can submit a balanced budget, as required by the provincial government.

This is over and above the more than $40 million that has already been cut from the Board budget over the past 8 years. Due to BC Liberal underfunding, Boards of Education in BC are facing a structural shortfall of more than $132 million for the 2009-10 school year.

Trustees will also approve a “Needs” budget that illustrates the Vancouver school district needs more than $40 million in additional funding to return to 2001-02 service and funding levels.
