Mayor Gregor Robertson highlights Vision Vancouver's accomplishments and recent work in this letter:

In a 9-1 vote last week, City Council passed my motion for city staff to develop a bylaw that would protect Vancouver from the immense costs and risk of potential oil spills in or near our harbour. In light of Kinder Morgan's plans for five-fold increase in oil tanker traffic through Vancouver (300-360 tankers per year by 2017), it's important that Vancouver takes every step possible to ensure that local taxpayers and small businesses aren't on the hook for the potentially enormous costs of a worst-case oil spill.

Vision Vancouver's team on the Park Board has also been active on this issue, having passed Commissioner Niki Sharma's motion to express formal opposition to increased oil tanker traffic through Vancouver's harbour.

The Vision Vancouver led school board adopted a balanced budget, protecting front-line services, as well as increasing funding for adult education and anti-homophobia mentors.

I'm also proud to report that City Council passed $2.1 million for community grants last week, providing key funding support for poverty reduction, child care and early learning, green jobs, and urban agriculture.

We also endorsed the 'Stop the Violence campaign', joining four former BC Attorney Generals and community leaders from across BC in a call to get tough on organized crime and gang violence by regulating marijuana.

It's been a week of hard work on Vancouver's behalf––and the coming month will be even busier as we continue our work to tackle housing affordability and homelessness and to build upon Vancouver's strong position as a competitive home for jobs and economic opportunity.
