Harper confirms support for commercial seal hunt despite protests from animal lovers
PETA protesters take issue with Harper’s support for the slaughter of baby seals, and say it's costing taxpayers millions to promote the dying industry.
Passionate campaigners from animal rights organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) gathered in Ottawa today to protest Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s support of the Canadian seal hunt.
Their message: seal hunting is not worth the cost to taxpayers.
During a media event and photo op set up by the Prime Minister’s Office, Harper confirmed the government’s endorsement of the controversial Canadian industry. He was joined at the event by Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq, also the Minister for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, and Pujjuut Kusugak, Mayor of the Northern community of Rankin Inlet.
For animal rights organizations like PETA, the governments’ support shows a blatant disregard for the concerns of citizens both here and abroad.
“The Canadian government is going against the will of the majority of Canadians, while slapping us in the face by spending millions of our tax dollars on this dead industry,” said PETA organizer Emma Lavender.
“Canadians should not have to fund this,” she said.
Seal hunt: no market or economic benefit
According to PETA’s seal hunt fact sheet, the federal government pours up to $7 million a year to maintain an industry that only nets about $1 million. While seal pelts used to earn hunters over $100 each, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans reported that in 2010, pelts were sold for only about $20 to $25—a price many believe is much too small to warrant such a brutal practice.
The declining value of seal pelts has had much to do with international policies that have developed over recent years. In 2009, the European Union voted to ban the sale of seal products and the United States quickly followed suit, passing legislation to try to end the annual hunt.
“There are no markets,” explained Lavender.
“The US, the European Union and most recently Russia — which imports 95 per cent of Canadian seal fur—have all banned seal imports. So the industry is dead.”
An important Aboriginal tradition
Despite these discouraging trends, officials from a number of government ministries are amping up their support for the industry. Today in the House of Commons, Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield urged other Members of Parliament to sport seal fur lapel pins, which were provided by the Nunavut Government and the Nunuvut Arts and Crafts Association.
“Sealing is an important economic and cultural driver in Canada’s eastern, arctic and northern communities,” Ashfield said in a statement.
“It is a long-standing and integral part of Canada’s rural culture and a way of life for thousands of Canadians.”
This big push for sealing comes as part of the Northern Lights 2012 Business and Cultural Showcase, being held this week in Ottawa. While proponents of the seal hunt often rely on the notion that it’s a tradition deeply ingrained in Northern Aboriginal culture, animal rights activists say the government often uses this argument to validate more harmful, commercial practices.
“Our campaign has nothing to do with the Aboriginal seal hunt. This is about the commercial seal slaughter on the East Coast. The Canadian government is often standing behind the Aboriginal hunt, but it really has nothing to do with it,” said Lavender.
“It’s misleading because the Canadian government is really using the Aboriginal hunt to promote the commercial seal slaughter.”

For years PETA has mounted hate campaigns aimed at destroying the market for seal products. Now they turn around and say the shrinking market is justification to shut down the industry entirely. Talk about crooked!
Here’s an idea: Shut PETA down instead!
““The Canadian government is going against the will of the majority of Canadians, while slapping us in the face by spending millions of our tax dollars on this dead industry,” said PETA organizer Emma Lavender.”
PETA lies. Professionally conducted polls consistently show that the majority of Canadians support the seal hunt. Only polls conducted by PETA and other animal-rights groups say any different. And if they use the same inflammatory language and made-up facts in their polls as they do in their campaign material, it’s no wonder.
Oh brother. PETA’s “fact sheet” is a mix of irrelevancies, things that are their own fault, and just plain lies.
First off, this news article is completely biased. And secondly Peta is a joke, they've done more harm to animals than good, and are a perfect representation of hypocrisy. Are seals going extinct? NO! Grey seals (The most common type of seal hunted) Are listed as "least concerned" regarding their conservation status. So what are you complaining about? If they were endangered I could understand, but they're not. And the Canadian seal hunt isn't going to bring them there. Not only is the seal hunt a tradition for many aboriginal peoples, but it is also a livelihood for many northern communities. People like you and I that need to make a living to feed their families and keep a roof over their heads. I encourage Peta supporters to learn some truth by visiting this website and having an open-minded outlook about what it has to say: http://www.kookycongos.ca/peta.htm If you respect or love animals that's understandable, but Peta is not the organisation you should be supporting.
"According to PETA’s seal hunt fact sheet,"
Seriously??? This is a tissue of blatant lies, as you would know if you did your research. For forty years, the innocent people of Newfoundland, Labrador, and the Magdalene Islands have entured unjustified and dishonest attacks aimed at destroying our livelihoods and our communities. These attacks have been carried out by amoral self serving companies like PETA, IFAW, HSUS, and Sea Shepherd, companies that have, after four decades, build a completely false image of the seal hunt.
Seals are not skinned alive, that lie was invented by Brian Davies of IFAW who paid a man who wasn't a sealer to skin a seal alive so he could film it and use the footage to falsely accuse sealers. He might have pioneered the staged animal "cruelty" video, but other animal rights companies have also come to learn of the fundraising potential of torturing animals to death to make footage to slander the innocent. HSUS are past masters at it. The seal hunt is economically important to rural communities, dispite it's small gross profit. We do actually eat seal meat, it tastes quite good, actually.
For me, the question is: why would you publish offensive lies that unjustly attack and defame your "fellow Canadians" on the other side of the country? Why would you support and promote the unjust exploitation of innocent fishermen and their families for profit? Why would you swallow, without question it would seem, the lies of an exploitative and dishonest industry, aiding in their defamation and slander of your fellow Canadians, without even bothering to check your facts?
Is it some kind of anti-Newfoundland bigotry, or are you just more interested in being politically correct than in reporting the facts and defending your "fellow Canadians" from unjust, exploitative, and dishonest attacks? Seriously. Your fellow Canadians have been exploited and harassed like for forty years, and you are STILL functioning as a cheering squad for the exploiters? How is it possible that, after forty years, you still either don't know, or don't care, about the dishonesty, bigotry, and hypocrisy of the animal rights industry's attacks on us, nor of how offensvie your support for that exploitation is to those who are being defamed in this manner?
The Quebecois media is much better at this. At least they recognize that their fishermen are being unjustly exploited, and they don't support that exploitation the way you and several other Western Canadian media outlets seem to.
The seal hunt is truly disgusting. Im embarassed that i live in a country where this is allowed to take place. But it doesnt matter, soon enough countries will ban the hunt and those killers will have to go to work at walmart.

Hurting animals in any way is cruel and wrong. Clubbing seals to death falls into this category. It's complete b.s to claim the only way a community can support itself or families is by killing seals. I'm sure that's a easy excuse to make a few extra bucks (might I remind you people once supported the slave trade to "support their families too" and that didn't make it moral). I don't care who brings this issue to attention-Peta or otherwise-it's common sense really.
