Is Mike Klassen Preparing to Run for City Council?

Read More:

I have now received several emails and been a part of a few holiday conversations with NPA affiliated political operatives which have brought the name of Mike Klassen to my attention as a potential City Council candidate in 2011.

Klassen is of course one half of the tandem that runs the virulently anti-Vision Vancouver CityCaucus website.

Now of course at this point, speculation, rumour and conjecture is all I have to go on, making this post little more than a political “What if?” rather than a definitive comment on such a candidacy.

However, if indeed there is basis for such an assertion, I have a few questions to pose.

  • Which party would Klassen run for?  I mean, with posts that question whether there is even a need for the NPA with the emergence of Vision, it seems as though he would be hard pressed to go and make nice within his former local political entitty of choice.
  • If Klassen does run, would CityCaucus officially become little more than a platform for a future candidate rather than what the website describes as “a fun, but respectful dialogue about Canada’s major urban centres”?
  • As a candidate rather than simply a poliitcal operative, would Klassen still be as opposed to wards as an electoral system, in consideration of his roots in the Mountain View neighbourhood?
  • Is Klassen’s interest in runnning contingent on the Mayoral candidate he would be affiliated with (assuming he chooses not to run as an independent)?
  • As a candidate, will Klassen’s past and future political attacks against Vision Vancouver’s policies/conduct become even less credible?
  • So as not to be accused of asking these questions in isolation, I am sending the text of this post to klassen [at] thinkcap.com to see if I can get some answers directly from the source.

    Stay tuned…

    As a former neighbour of

As a former neighbour of Klassen's (or "Constable Mike" as some know him -- no, he's not actually a peace officer), I can say he is a real piece of work. He's taken it upon himself to ensure that everyone in Pleasantville is "up to code." As such, he's a great fit for civic politics. I was once speaking with him on my doorstep after he had stopped by for one of his weekly visits. It may have been to pass on his recommendation that we cover the ground around our house with gravel so we could hear the thieves coming. Not a bad idea, actually (although we didn't comply). Or it may have been just one of his many intrusive visits asking us to mow our lawn or rake our leaves if we'd managed to let things go a few days beyond Plesantville standards of good order. In fact, I can't remember exactly what he had come calling for on this occasion, as I found myself so distracted by his incessant fiddling with our mailbox. The lid was broken and would not stay in place -- something most people would scarcely have noted, but his compulsion for order would not allow him to leave it alone while talking to me. As I listened to him patiently, I could visualize the internal tug-of-war taking place in his mind -- "MUST INFORM RESIDENT OF PROPERTY NON-COMPLIANCE / MUST FIX MAILBOX LID / ARRGHH." Good luck with City Hall, Mike.
