A Canadian Moment

Canada stands to win its first Olympic Gold Medals during the 2010 Games.  At a  tenuous moment for national athletes, international visitors streamed into Vancouver and the young man in this photograph wore the maple leaf. A volunteer at the Olympic Village said it appeared that most of the athletes had arrived from around the world and the atmosphere in the dining hall was "extremely serious."

"They don't smile.  They don't catch your eye.  They're not laughing."

Reports from the Convention Centre where the media sponsors of the 2010 Olympic Games began to gather were that "it's cold in here."

To protect broadcasting equipment, temperatures are kept low, reportedly so low that some researchers are wearing touques, mittens and coats at their desks.  A coca-cola umbrella was being used to protect workers from the cold air gushing through a vent.

Word is that the head of NBC news likes to keep it cool.

More on that in my new blog:  Overheard at the Olympics, starting tomorrow.
