"The Digital Narrative" at Emily Carr explores storytelling in the digital age

Pravin Pillay

The digital medium offers new ways and structures to tell stories. It offers us the ability to re-create our stories in a style where authority does not rest with an expert but is co-generated from multiple perspectives. Non-linearity, virtual and interactive, weave together, augmenting or replacing the linear, the physical and the one-way in the digital realm.

Hyper text, hyper art, hyper ideas.

Last week, savvy business people in sharp suits, academics who might have spent an hour too many in front of their laptops and bright eyed technician-artists came together on Granville Island with the intention of harvesting a crop of digital insight. The 2010 International Digital Media and Arts Association conference "The Digital Narrative" was held at Emily Carr University (ECU).  The aim: to explore ideas of how storytelling and communication is influencing and influenced by new and emerging technologies.

Special Teams Sparks Canucks Win Streak

Tyler Wilde

Having won five games in a row following a 3-1 decision over the Colorado Avalanche Thursday, the Canucks have quickly answered a few lingering questions that arose at the start of the season.  They are proving they can win on the road, the second and third lines can produce, and the power play and penalty kill can both be in the upper echelon of the NHL.  It’s a combination of these things, along with getting key players like Keith Ballard and Alex Burrows back in the lineup that sees the Canucks in the division lead for the first time this season, and playing the hockey everyone in Vancouver expected to see from the start.

"November Rain": Your Numerology Cycles for November 1–15

Cassandra MacLeane

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin’ when I hold you,
Don’t you know I feel the same
‘Cause nothin’ lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it’s hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain.

Those lines from “November Rain’’ by Guns N’ Roses describe perfectly the cycle feeling of November. While the energy of our 2010 cycle year is still in evidence, it is restrained and fading, and our hearts are changing in the cold November rain. The energy of the new cycle, though not officially in place until the beginning of January, becomes stronger and many of the issues we focused on this year flicker like a candles in the rain.
