Vancouver saxophonist and composer Colin MacDonald presents a concert of original and exciting post-minimalist music for 12-piece chamber ensemble with The Colin MacDonald Pocket Orchestra. Ensemble pianist Anna Levy will be featured in the North American premiere of Fantaisie by Bulgarian composer Benzion Eliezer, for piano and symphonic jazz orchestra. The memory of British composer Steve Martland will be celebrated in the energetic works Kick and Mr. Anderson’s Pavane, alongside fresh compositions by CMPO ensemble members Brad Muirhead, Stefan Hintersteininger, and Colin MacDonald, and a new arrangement of Michael Nyman’s Knowing the Ropes.
“Fantasia” celebrates the diversity of talent in the Colin MacDonald Pocket Orchestra. Coming from a wide combination of backgrounds in the classical, jazz, pop, and world music genres, this unique chamber orchestra is perfectly suited to the rhythmically energetic and melodically driven post-minimalism of the early 21st Century. “The Fantaisie by Bulgarian composer Eliezer is the oldest work in our repertoire,” says bandleader MacDonald, “but its combination of symphonic and jazz elements is a forerunner of our regular programming, a kind of Eastern European Rhapsody in Blue.” British composer Steve Martland passed away suddenly this year at the age of 53, leaving behind a radical body of work with a fierce energy, including the Celtic-tinged Kick and the stately Mr. Anderson’s Pavane. The program also features the composing talents of some ensemble members including premieres by bass trombonist Brad Muirhead, cellist Stefan Hintersteininger, and saxophonist/bandleader MacDonald.
Formed in 2006, the Colin MacDonald Pocket Orchestra takes its lead from other composer-led ensembles such as the Philip Glass Ensemble, the Michael Nyman Band, and Steve Reich and Musicians, providing a vehicle for bandleader MacDonald’s original works. Hypnotic rhythms, passionate melodies, and infectious grooves that synthesize elements of jazz, world music, and the classical tradition are performed with virtuosity and with no conductor! The ensemble has been presented by the Redshift Music Society, the Yarilo Music Society, and was featured on the 2009 Louis Andriessen Festival presented by Music on Main.
