Gryphon Trio: Beethoven's Best

Piano Trio “Ghost”, Op.70, No.1

Piano Trio “Archduke”, Op.97

The internationally acclaimed all-Canadian Gryphon Trio makes its MusicFest Vancouver debut with an all-Beethoven program featuring two of the composer’s best-loved works. The Largo of Op.70 contains shimmering piano tremolos and a ghoulish atmosphere that Beethoven’s star pupil Carl Czerny called “an appearance from the underworld,” hence the nickname “The Ghost”. The “Archduke” trio is not only Beethoven’s masterpiece in the genre but also one of his finest lyrical achievements. Through its highly refined, dynamic performances, the Gryphon Trio has firmly established itself as one of the world’s pre-eminent piano trios. MusicFest Vancouver is pleased to feature the consummate artistry of this renowned ensemble in three diverse programs (see concerts on August 16 and August 17).

“The Gryphon Trio is one of the best ensembles in the world, consistently making music of rare excellence.” The Globe and Mail, Toronto
