Vancouver oil pipeline protest, Dec.2013. A huge coalition of groups have registered with the NEB to oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion project.

Today, despite a heavily criticized online process, approximately 2,000 individuals, groups and governments registered before the deadline to apply to participate in a National Energy Board’s hearing into the Kinder Morgan oil sands pipeline expansion project.

Retired schoolteacher, 89-year-old Elsie Dean was one such applicant.

“We just don’t want the oil pipeline coming into Burnaby at all.  We don’t think it’s safe,” said Dean on Wednesday.

She represents Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion (BROKE) – just one of a huge rainbow of citizen, aboriginal, environmental and advocacy groups, expected to speak out strongly against the $5 billion oil sands pipeline project.

“We believe it will have spills, because of the [company’s] record, and we don’t want the Burrard Inlet polluted with dilbit.”

The Trans Mountain pipeline would carry nearly 900,000 barrels per day of diluted bitumen from Alberta to Burnaby, through densely populated areas, and near drinking-source aquifers, homes and school playgrounds.

An NEB spokesperson said Wednesday the large number of applicants is "considerable" but expected.

That huge list includes a fair number of governments: 15 cities including Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Kamloops and Edmonton; the Province of Alberta, Washington State, Nicola Tribal Council, and the Township of Langley.  Some of these are not strictly against the project, but Vancouver and Burnaby are.

Hundreds of residents, with pipeline concerns related to declining property values, earthquakes, storage tanker explosions, oil spills, and terrorist attacks, will also be represented.

One group – Parents from Cameron Elementary School – said many families worry about the risk of a pipeline accident hurting their children, who walk near the pipeline, or play in playgrounds as close as 100 metres from the route.

“In case of any spills or accidents during or after the pipeline construction, it would be our children directly affected,” wrote Tongpil Min, a father with a child at Cameron Elementary.

At least eight environmental groups also applied, including PIPE UP NetworkGeorgia Strait Alliance and three salmon conservation groups.  A mountain biking group, and three condo councils also registered.

ForestEthics Advocacy, which applied as an intervenor, is encouraged by the large number of applicants.

"It’s great to see so many people still dedicated to trying to make public processes work," said Ben West, the group's Tar Sands Campaign Director.

"Even when faced with a Prime Minister who seems to be obsessed with stacking the deck against anyone who disagrees with him about wanting more pipelines and oil tankers."

Why does Kinder Morgan get to argue to remove applicants from the list?

And after the vast majority of the people presenting to the NEB indicate their opposition to the project, the NEB will go away and ask Stephen Harper how he would like their "report" to read and then pass it by the oil companies and Kinder Morgan for their final approval and then approve the pipeline expansion.  Just the way they did for Enbridge.

Because the oil-bought Harper is a corporate fascist, who is not standing-up for Canadians.

It’s only a matter of time before public hearing will become public announcements, if the Conservatives or Liberals have their way.

Its time they woke up to the fact WE WOKE UP and were not going to take it anymore!

"Fiat currency" is money based on debt, which is to say, nothing.

"Fractional reserve accounting" is when the bank gets to print money from thin air, and lend it to you; additionally, for every dollar they print, they then get to lend out 9 more dollars, at interest, which they are then repaid.  Essentially, the Bank of Canada has authorized the private banks to print 18 dollars (assuming they are fully repaid) at interest, per dollar they lend you, from nothing.

"Wage-slave" is someone who works for a pay rate just above nothing.  "Nothing" is relative, of course.

"Labour trap" is when you cannot stop working for a day, to rest, heal, or perform some other activity, for fear of going broke.

These are the chains that bind you.  Understand these terms.

Colonialism sucks.

You can't be seriously considering 2000 people as"swamped", can you?
What about the other two million B.C. residents that are 100% FOR the Enbridge pipeline, done with the excellent Environmental initiatives that ARE being instituted throughout this proposal?
"Swamped"???....yeah right.

I offer this letter in response to D. M. Fraser letter of Feb 17, The expansion of Roberts bank is  ongoing ..and one day may be required for ‘oil’ export facilities? But TODAY there is a much simpler ,option— DON’ T TWIN THE KINDER MORGAN PIPELINE as proposed—instead order the two wannabe pipe liners (Enbridge and Kinder Morgan)to form a joint venture and minimize chances of bitumen ocean spills along the entire BC coast ,from Strait of Juan de Fuca to Alaska panhandle !   What we want to avoid is this result -      --which resulted from a relative ‘thimblefull’ spill  of ship’s fuel oil.  This joint-venture ‘ONE PIPELINE SYSTEM ‘,(from Alberta and to a shipping terminal at a point just north of Prince Rupert)--- would provide the access to world markets and   removes bitumen laden tankers  from Douglas Channel ,Burrard Inlet, and the busy shipping channels through southern Gulf Islands ! Until the BITUMEN industry DEMONSTRATES  that they can deal with all the issues related to that inevitable bitumen mess on our beaches and other countless precious ocean areas—they must adapt to reality—and realize that pipeline and ocean routes will be RESTRICTED by the concerned BC public ! The LNG industry has a proven safety record(after decades of complex storage and shipping challenges). Now it’s  the Bitumen industry’  ‘turn’ to  earn their proven safety   record.Your move leaders—lead NOW...please !
