Press Release
In Why I Love Vancouver: Reflections on a City by a Pulitzer-Nominated American Journalist, author Linda Solomon pens a love letter to the city that embraced her with open arms.

Why I Love Vancouver opens in New York City the morning of September 11, 2001, as American-born Solomon drops her son off at school for his first day of kindergarten. The towers of the World Trade Centre fall before her eyes and she is shaken by the terror in the voices of the children around her. Soon after, she heads to “the world’s most livable city” to raise her family and build her publishing business.

Solomon’s courtship with Vancouver is relayed through stunning essays that capture the city’s epic beauty and jarring ugliness. From the heart of the Downtown Eastside, to Grouse Mountain in the summertime, to American Thanksgiving in the weeks following her brother's life-saving kidney transplant, Solomon offers a frank appraisal of a city in transition at the very moment when the eyes of the world fall upon it.

In addition to Solomon’s personal narrative and analysis, Why I Love Vancouver puts its finger on the pulse of Canada’s gateway to the Pacific through intriguing interviews with some of the city’s most prominent and controversial movers-and-shakers, including: city councilor Kerry Jang; journalist Frances Bula; David Eby, executive director of the BC Civil Liberties Association; city manager Penny Ballem; Miss Nude BC Tammy Morris; and Susan Heyes, the Cambie Street storekeeper who sued the Canada Line for $600,000 in damages—and won.

“As an American, I see so much worth protecting here, from the vast tracts of boreal rain forest in the north to the good policies that provide health care for every Canadian,” writes Solomon. “After nine years in Canada, whatever illusions I held that Canada is faultless are gone. But I feel lucky to be here.”

Why I Love Vancouver is published by Vancouver Observer Publications.
