Vancouver map outlines areas inhabited by “hipsters”, “foreigners” and “old money”

Alexis Stoymenoff
Dec 8th, 2011

A lot of people think of Vancouver neighbourhoods in a stereotypical way, but many are too polite to express these thoughts out loud. Well, this new map that surfaced on Twitter gives voice to some of those assumptions, breaking the city up into different regions based on race, sexuality and socio-economics.

From west to east, small areas are designated to groups like "naked hippies", "old Europeans", "condo foreigners" and "gay guys". While some blocks appear to contain a more saturated population of say, hipsters, other sections are left for "overflow".

Other local outlets like Vancity Buzz and the Georgia Straight have commented on the map's somewhat shocking accuracy. And if you're a resident with a fairly solid knowledge of the city, you may find that you agree.

Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish plans to move to Major League Baseball

One of Japan's biggest hotties planning to come play in the big league...

Japanese baseball superstar Yu Darvish has just said he plans to come to the U.S. to play in the Major League.

This should be exciting news for the MLB, for several reasons: while Darvish is an accomplished and talented pitcher, he's also well-known in Japan as a media-friendly heartthrob whose photogenic mug appears in ads across the country.

One of the many beer and coffee ads sporting Yu Darvish's signature half-smile.

His back story is interesting: the son of an Iranian father and Japanese mother, he was often harassed as a foreigner by his peers. He went on to become a star baseball athlete in high school and was an instant hit with female fans after joining Japan's Pacific League and signing on with the Nippon Ham Fighters.

90s rap icon and aspiring internet mogul MC Hammer has tweeted that he's a fan of Justin Bieber, challenging anyone who doesn't like the idea to confront him in person:

"oh yea and I'm a proud  fan," he tweeted today.

"Any grown man got a problem with that don't tweet me, meet me and lets do it bully," he tweeted.

Hammer's not the only grown man with street credibility to profess his love for Bieber. Back in September, Brazilion riot police were stunned to find that one of the nations' most feared drug lords lived in a house filled with Bieber posters, as well as a giant wall painting of the Canadian pop star.

Backlash: Kardashians sue without batting an eye

We're so torn about the news that the Kardashian clan (klan?) are suing over fake lashes being sold in their name. Tell us it isn't so, TMZ.com.

Just to be clear, the fake part doesn't offend the fam. Only the part where they're not getting a cut of the action.

We'd love to join them in brand outrage over the alleged ripoff that is the KardashianLash, because we feel their pain. An awful lot of personal pride, dignity and, well, natural cleavage was sacrificed on their way up the brand-recognition ladder.

On the other hand, the poor woman selling the eyelash enhancerment system tells TMZ she was only trying to raise money to send Honduran orphans to cosmetology school  and that she's going to court to file a trademark.

If we weren't wearing such cheap mascara, we'd weep.

Herman Cain's a giant nerd, Nerds4Cain say

Herman Cain quoted, of all things, a Pokémon movie in his speech to suspend his presidential campaign today.

"I believe these words came from the Pokémon movie," Cain said, addressing crowds in Atlanta.

"Life can be a challenge. Life can seem impossible. It's never easy when there's so much on the line. But you and I can make a difference. There's a mission just for you and me....Just look inside and you will find just what you can do."

The lines actually come from a Donna Summer song called "The Power of One", which was in Pokémon: The Movie 2000. In the past, he attributed this quote vaguely to a "poet", but this time around he gave proper credit to the animated film.

James Bond has made it clear that he's tired of "keeping up with the Kardashians."

Daniel Craig, who's starring in the upcoming thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, called the socialites "f**king idiots" in a recent interview with the UK edition of GQ.

“Look at the Kardashians, they’re worth millions … I don’t think they were that badly off to begin with, but now look at them. You see that and you think, ‘What, you mean all I have to do is behave like a f**king idiot on television and then you’ll pay me millions?’ I’m not judging it,” he said, adding, “Well, I am, obviously.”

After a woman came forward alleging that she and Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain had a 13-year extramarital relationship, Cain told supporters Tuesday morning that he would "reassess" his role in the Republican presidential race," ABC News reports.

During the call, he reportedly said that his decision will be based on support in the midst of election drama, if the allegation will create "too much of a cloud, in some people's minds, as to whether or not they would be able to support [them] going forth" and his family," CBS News added.

He told his senior staff over a five-minute conference call that he would complete the assessment "over the next several days," according to the news source.

While Cain described his relationship with Ginger White, "just a friendship relationship," he said that he "now know[s] that she wasn't the friend that [he] thought she was."

Four years in the slammer for Michael Jackson's Dr. Conrad Murray

Four years in the slammer for Michael Jackson's doc, judge ruled. It was a bittersweet day at the Los Angeles court, as Jackson's family quietly awaited the court's decision. The 58-year-old Conrad Murray sat "expressionless throughout the proceeding," ABC News reports.

The judge Michael Pastor said that Murray treated Jackson like a "medical experiment," and, "unquestionably, violated the trust and confidence of his patient." He was given maximum sentence for involuntary manslaughter, like Jackson's family wanted. He was also sentenced $100 million ("the singer's projected earnings from the 50-show 'This Is It' tour payable to the Jackson estate") and was also asked to pay $1.8 million "in costs associated with Jackson's memorial service and funeral."

Jackson's parents Katherine and Joe and siblings Jermaine, LaToya and Randy were all present, but didn't speak. Attorney and family friend Brian Panish spoke on behalf of the family.
