Three penguins waddle to the shimmering rock surface, before toppling down. Their sharp-beaked heads swivel toward the sun. Another day in paradise, at the Vancouver Aquarium.

Taxi!

A faint light comes into view at the other end of Granville Street, and I find myself leaping into the road. It’s 3 a.m. on a Sunday, cold air biting at my feet.  I need a cab.

The previously halted cars rush by, strokes of taxicab yellow, and I awkwardly fling my arms into the air. In front of me, five different groups of people appear to do the same. Three partygoers gurgle with pleasure near by. Two women, wearing ripped nylons, flick their cigarettes into the sky and spew profanities at the passing cars.

My breath materializes into a mutant cloud in front of me. Then it disappears.

Cabs speed by  like yellow bullets. Not one stops. Shadows can be seen moving behind the fogged-up windows. My legs quake. The robot voice on the  other end of the phone encourages me to “hold on”, a taxi representative will speak to me soon, it’s faster this way, and to not drink and drive.

40 minutes crawl by.

I wait. I wave. I walk. I sit.

I turn around and walk two blocks. A bus is waiting. I get closer. It’s not my bus. I wait. Another bus arrives. I stand up. I enter. I sit.

Happiness.

'Bullying Sucks' tour comes to Kindersley, Youtube video by

The Mohican-haired lead singer leaped across the stage, screaming into the mike and slamming on his guitar as his drummer let loose his machine-gun blast beats in the finest traditions of Vancouver punk rock, now ripping through Saskatchewan like a prairie wildfire.

Vocalist and guitarist Jayden Faber

This was none other than Childsplay, who came to Kindersley’s Norman Ritchie Community Centre on September 30 as part of their two-week Bullying Sucks Tour, taking the young rockers through B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan, speaking out against a scourge that ruins the lives of thousands of Canadian schoolchildren every day.

This is what happens when you get 15 local musicians, 10 locations around Vancouver and five days. One awesome project to make things more shiny, happy and bright in the city.

The SFU Public Square "One Voice" music project is a spur to revive community connections and to pump up multicultural relations in a meaningful way.

"This an exciting initiative that harnesses the power of music, media, performance and collaboration to bridge across differences and inspire meaningful connections between (and an appreciation for) our diverse community members," reads the SFU blog post "Connecting a City with One Voice."
