The Big Lebowski is among the films featured at the Retro Film Festival.

Watch out, Vancouver - another film festival has arrived in town. The first ever retro cinema festival will hit Vancouver on September 23. Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest is an eight-day film festival that will feature 15 cult following classics from The Godfather, Back to the Future and The Labyrinth, to Ghostbusters and the legendary Big Lebowski.

Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest is much more than a series of movie screenings – this festival offers a total movie watching experience. The organization endeavours to bring movie lovers together, while bringing American cult classics to life.

The event will consist of costume competitions, a screening of the film(s), trivia contests, prizes and also themed drink specials. The theatre’s atmosphere will come to life with movie soundtracks playing, while the animated host of the evening keeps the crowd entertained and engaged throughout the night.

This festival’s concept will be new to Vancouver by way of Australia. The idea to open a Retro Cinema Fest in Vancouver came to former theatre usher Ronald Tucker, originally from Canada, while working at the Orpheum Picture Palace in Sydney Australia’s North Shore. Starting with the roll-out of the Sydney Retro Cinema, Ronald and his business partners knew immediately they were on to something brilliant.

“One of my favourite past times is getting together with old friends to celebrate classic films,” says Tucker. “The aim of Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest is to get film lovers from all over the province to come together and celebrate these classic films in true retro style.”

The festival will kick off on Sunday, September 23 at the Denman Cinema in Vancouver’s West End. Tickets for the festival range from $20 – $25 per nightly event and each showing will include 2-3 films per evening, with exception to two special events for Pricilla Queen of the Desert& Drag Contest  on the 28th and The Lebowski Bash on September 29.

“Lebowski Bash Australia was our first stand-alone film based event in Sydney,” says Tucker. “We had more than 670 people attend and it was so successful that we threw another in Melbourne in late June. The Vancouver Retro Cinema has come off the back of this passion for retro film and film events amongst Australians.”
