Juno-winner K’naan has had quite a year.  Following the release of Troubadour – which hit #12 on the U.S. Billboard top albums chart – K’naan remixed “Wavin’ Flag” to be the official song of the FIFA World Cup and is currently touring on the Coca-Cola Trophy tour which hits 86 countries, including every African nation.

K’naan took a break from his hectic touring schedule to attend the 2010 Juno Awards in St. Johns, Newfoundland, where he performed Wavin’ Flag (with Young Artists for Haiti Drake, Justin Bieber and Nikki Yanofsky), presented Brian Adams an award and won for artist and songwriter of the year.

Red Bull’s Heavy on the Right Coast party – planned and executed by Anna Von Frances of Pink Mafia – was the place to be during Juno week-end.  The event was hosted by Canadian rap superstar Drake, who since won Junos for rap recording of the year and best new artist – incidentally, before even releasing a full-length album.

Drake, also known as Aubrey Drake Graham of Degrassi: The Next Generation fame, is signed to Young Money Entertainment, the rap label of Lil Wayne.  Drake has worked with the biggest names in hip-hop including Jay-Z, Kanye West and Eminem.  His upcoming album is projected to be released in June 2010 and is very highly anticipated.

West Jet reports that they've released all flights leaving St. John's.  The delay in air traffic as a result of volcanic ash  reported this morning was only temporary, the airline said.

The New York Times reported today that air transportation authorities hammered out a proposal to resume air traffic in Europe, where thousands have been stranded for the last few days. Authorities carved out three zones, including a "no-fly zone", to deal with the presence of volcanic ash over the continent.  From the Times:

Musicians and media stuck in St. John's after Junos due to volcanic ash and grounded flights

Attendees at the Juno Awards had a hard time flying to St. John's due to  fog, which had grounded the planes in Halifax. Now, all the planes are grounded  in St. John's due to the volcanic debris from Iceland.

Michael Buble told media at the press room yesterday that he was leaving because there's been talk about grounding planes. He left halfway through the show because his pilot advised him to leave before the debris/ash hits St. John's. The media were stunned upon hearing this and now everyone is getting concerned about their own flights back home.

I don't know what we will have to do in case anything but I think today I will be buying face masks to protect my nose.

K'naan picked up an award for songwriter of the year, adding to his artist of the year award from last night's awards gala. K'naan tells Canadians that "Canada has got its heart in the right place."

Bublé accepted awards on Sunday, April 18th for album of the year, fans choice, and single of the year.  He rushed off to the airport because flights from St. Johns may be cancelled for several days due to volcanic ash from Iceland.

Metric won for group of the year.  Emily Haines advised young artists to "set your own course."

Drake won rap recording of the year (So Far Gone) as well as new artist of the year.  Drake says that in Canadian music this year, "we've seen some special people rise up this year and I'm proud to be one of them."
