On a night when the Vancouver Giants honoured former scoring leader Gilbert Brulé, the current edition of the team won its fifth straight game Friday, defeating the Kamloops Blazers 3-1.  The Giants dominated the game from start to finish, outshooting the visitors 38-17 and scoring once in each period. Only a remarkable performance from Kamloops goaltender Jeff Bosch kept the score respectable.

Right winger Brendan Gallagher opened the scoring with his team-leading 33rd of the season on a two-on-one break, following a tidy toe drag past a sprawling defender with a wrist shot past Bosch. The Giants looked to extend the lead, but the Blazer backstop made several impressive stops in tight on Czech centre Andrej Stastny, who was dangerous all night long. The Blazers showed some grit in the 14th minute of the first, stealing the puck down low – tic, tac, tap-in, Dylan Willick sent the game to the dressing room tied at one on just the team’s third shot of the night.

Team Canada rolled past defending champions Team USA in a semi-final match-up on Monday at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Buffalo, NY. This 4 – 1 victory was bittersweet as Canada avenged last year’s gold medal loss to the Americans on home ice.

With the help of thousands of screaming fans, the Canadians might have been playing on foreign soil but felt as if they were right at home.  It was clear right from the start which team had more energy and jump to their game as Canada outplayed and dominated in every way.

There are some things we come to expect when the holiday season comes around: family, friends, and the World Junior Hockey Championships. Three days into the tournament, Canada looks to be in cruise control with a 2 – 0 record.  Tuesday Canada skated to a 7 – 2 victory over the Czech Republic in Buffalo, but in doing so lost some key players to injuries and suspension.

Forward Zack Kassian was given a match penalty for a check to the head or neck area while defenseman Calvin de Haan suffered a lower body injury.  Kassian will serve a mandatory 1 game suspension for his match penalty meaning he will not play tomorrow versus Norway.  The severity of de Haan’s injury is undetermined after being driven hard into the boards and limping off the ice.  Forward Jaden Schwartz appeared to suffer a leg injury early in the game but returned to score the go ahead goal late in the 1st period.  He left again the 3rd after aggravating the injury.
