City to host ‘unconference’ to discuss affordable housing and solutions for homelessness

The City of Vancouver, with assistance from guest speaker former Mayor and B.C. Premier Mike Harcourt, will hold a discussion about how we can create more affordable housing and find solutions for homelessness. This unconference is part of the City’s innovative Talk Housing With Us public engagement program.
When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Empire Landmark Hotel, 1400 Robson Street
The dynamic unconference format allows participants to set their own agenda and explore topics that matter to them. People can lead or join any discussion of interest and they are asked to propose their discussion topics at: talkvancouver.com/housing.
During the unconference, participants will be asked to announce their discussion topics, post it onto the agenda and invite people to attend their session. Notetakers will record ideas which will be incorporated into a revised Housing and Homelessness Strategy for Vancouver, slated to come before City Council in summer 2011.

The City of Vancouver and its partners are working to end street homelessness by 2015 and to increase housing for low and modest-income households.
Talk Housing With Us, which runs from March to June, 2011, includes online forums, stakeholder workshops and a renters’ roundtable. A Health of The Homeless Youth Summit under the program will be held on June 14.

It's very easy to create affordable housing: the City should build homes and thus eliminate the 40% mark-up imposed by developers. Other cities do this and it works. Of course the Vision party is 80% funded by developers, so this is unlikely to happen.
