April Telek Nominated for 2010 Women in Film and Television Artistic Merit Award

Leading Canadian actress April Telek has been nominated for the 2010 Women in Film and Television Artistic Merit Award. Since 1995, Women in Film & Television Vancouver has presented the Artistic Merit Award to a BC woman filmmaker or performer whose work is appearing in the Vancouver International Film Festival for that year. The award recognizes and celebrates that woman’s high Artistic Merit and is presented at the VIFF Closing Ceremonies. www.womeninfilm.ca

April stars in the feature film ‘Amazon Falls’, which is currently screening at the Vancouver International Film Festival, and recently debuted at the Canada First Program at the Toronto International Film Festival Directed by Katrin Bowen, ‘Amazon Falls’ tells the story of a faded B-movie actress, Jana (April Telek), who refuses to give up her dream of being a star. But the clock is ticking, and she is on the cusp of forty, making it now or never for her dreams to become a reality. Despite her best efforts to live clean and expand her skills, Jana is ultimately overcome by the burden of a dream in a business that would seem to punish more for virtue than for vice.  Faced with perpetual futility and diminishing returns, she is forced to question whether or not it is time to let the dream go.

For ravishing former Miss Canada, April, this is the role of a lifetime. “April Telek gives a tour de force performance as Jana and her performance has Oscar written all over it,” says director Katrin Bowen.

April’s performance in Amazon Falls has garnered rave reviews in numerous publications and media throughout North America including The National Post, The Globe and Mail, The Vancouver Sun, The Province, The Toronto Sun, CTV, Gloss Magazine and Elle Canada.

Playing Jana is an opportunity of a lifetime for April.  “I have always wanted to play a complex character like Jana. I got to be vulnerable, I was forced to be vulnerable.  This role gave me a chance to stretch like never before and to go on a journey of exploration that required me to be exhilaratingly uncomfortable. This role in ‘Amazon Falls’, shows that dreams can come true.”

Joining April in this steller cast of Canada’s top talent is William B. Davis (The X Files), Zak Santiago (Shooters, Caprica), Gary Chalk (Watchman), Ben Ratner (Repeaters, Davinci’s City Hall, Moving Malcolm, Last Wedding), Gabrielle Rose (Mothers and Daughters) and Adrian Holmes (Smallville, Frankie and Alice).

April has compiled a long list of movie and television credits to her name throughout her impressive acting career. She co-starred opposite George Lopez and Golden Globe Nominee Jane Lynch in ‘Mr. Troop Mom’ for Nickelodeon, and starred alongside Shannon Doherty in the Hallmark Thanksgiving MOW ‘Growing the Big One’. She also shared her home with fans throughout Canada and the US, on an episode of ‘MTV Cribs’.

This fall April can be seen on Global Television’s  ‘Shattered’ and ‘Growing the Big One’. She just completed two very intriguing roles, one as Lilly Palmera', a coke snorting, high stakes poker playing actress in 'Endgame' and a Native American obsessed Domineering German woman in an episode of APTN’s ‘Health Nutz’.

April credits highly respected actors Felicity Huffman and William H. Macy, Henry Winkler, and the late, great John Ritter, with whom April was fortunate to work extremely closely with for an extended period, in helping her advance her craft as an actor.
